Over the years I have discovered that occasionally, no matter how careful we are, our dogs or puppies will sometimes get bloody diarrhea. If I have a dog with bloody diarrhea I give them some Diarsanyl that I get from Revival Animal Health. Diarsanyl is a oral paste nutritional supplement used as an aid in coating the intestinal mucosa. It works great if your dog has a intestinal bacterial infection. In most cases after one or two applications the diarrhea and bloody stool is gone. I don't change their diet or give them any special food. Usually they won't want to eat much anyway. I have never had a dog that did not clear up within 12 to 24 hours. Now if it is a puppy with diarrhea I use Albon. Any dog with bloody diarrhea needs immediate attention and this is why I alway keep these products on hand. If possible you need to know why your dog got sick but sometimes it is difficult to figure it out. Dogs that go outside are more likely to eat something that could cause intestinal upsets. You should always keep fresh water, change the water at least once a day. Keep your food fresh, once I open a bag of food it is gone within a week. Watch what treats you give your dogs, bully sticks and other treats are know to harbor bacteria. Sometime you will need to see a vet like the case where the dog ate a penny or if your dog gets a blockage but the majority of the cases of bloody diarrhea can simply be treated at home. Prevention is the best medicine. |
