Some companies won't cover problems specific to a breed (therefore Yorkie livers aren't covered). Then they won't cover preexisting conditions. If they won't cover those then Ellie's liver, pancreas, allergies, frequent urination, yeast infections in ears, eye discharge and periodontal problems wouldn't be covered. I think it's too late for us. Also, some companies start over after every year and won't cover any condition that the dog got in the last year because it is preexisting... The one type of insurance that could possibly be worth it is injury insurance. It is low cost and I think they pay a great deal of the bill..

I insured Jambo with Pet Plan after doing a lot of research into the different insurance companies. I noticed that VPI and others covered some routine care which Pet Plan did not. It was between Pet First (newer company) and Pet Plan. I went with Pet Plan because they did not have incident maximums, you can choose the deductible and co-pay, and they cover hereditary diseases which I am guessing that liver shunts fall into. I figured I can take care of routine costs (hate doing paperwork anyway) and I wanted insurance for the big cost emergencies. I haven't had to use it so far but I feel comfortable with the plan. I paid a little over $300 for the year with $50 deductible per incident (paid only once if multiple treatments but same issue) and $0 co-pay (didn't want to pay deductible and a balance).

I got the ASPCA insurance and so far they have helped with 1 vet charge per year and all vaccines and any illness. I know they don't cover any prexisting condition or any hereditary conditions. The store where i got him coveres hereditary for 2 years. However they have paid on the rest, i have only had it for 4 mos. but i can't complain yet. The 80% they pay has helped. Sorry you had a bad experience.

I think I've only heard one person ever say that they thought pet insurance was worth it. Even better than using Carecredit, why not put the $35 you would spend on pet insurance in a savings account especially for emergency vet bills? If you don't touch it unless you absolutely have to, it will grow to a sizeable amount in no time. Unexpected vet bills are part of owning a dog and I think everyone should be prepared for them.

If you read the brochure on VPI they tell you up front that they do not cover any known breed related health problems, but they do cover other things. I now have too many dogs to have the pet insurance, but when I did carry it, I had the wellness coverage also and it covered dentals for adults, yearly shots and exams, heartworm and flea medicines, and emergency visits. I more than got my money's worth for my guys, but now it is just too expensive for all my dogs and cats. You really need to read everything before taking on any insurance policy. It is the same as human insurance, if you have any health problems, you can not get an insurance policy to cover it.
