| Vegetarian diet? I've noticed that some manufacturers have "Vegetarian Formulas" for their kibbles. I was wondering if anyone here's ever fed their yorkie a vegetarian kibbles? What's the value of a vegetarian diet vs. one with meat? |

| diet Vegetarian kibble is very good, if mixed with a can of meat. Humans can be vegetarians if they choose...a dog needs meat to maintain good health..and that is not JMO. |

| Our vet also told us that a Vegetarian was not healthy and that dogs were meant to have meat. I've also read it in a few books - which ones escapes me at the moment.

| i believe dogs can be healthy on a vegetarian diet...they need protein, i agree, but not necesarily from meat...dogs are not like cats, whose are true carnivores and without meat will not thrive.. But if switching to a vegetarian diet, it needs a close monitoring of the animals as well as the food it is eating...

| I don't know why anyone would want to put a dog on a vegetarian diet. They love meat so much and it is good for them. I think a dog should have a variety of different healthy foods...including meat. Carol Jean |

| Dogs are omnivores and here is what it means... Omnivore From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search An omnivore (from Latin: omne all, everything; vorare to devour) is an animal that eats both plants and meat. Omnivores lack the specialist behaviour of carnivores and herbivores, searching widely for food sources, and are thus better able to withstand changes within their ecological niche. The digestive systems of omnivores reflect their versatility: they are able to digest the components of plants in the manner of herbivores but also readily assimilate protein and other nutrients from meat [1]. Given that brain size correlates to dietary quality (nutritional and caloric density of the diet) and omnivores have a wide-ranging diet, this group of animals is generally an intelligent one. The history of human evolution shows that supplementing our diet with meat allowed the development of substantially larger brains, a process that consumes large amounts of energy and nutrients. [2]. Other omnivorous animals with whom humans interact—raccoons, bears and even crows—often show remarkable intelligence in their food gathering behaviour. Animals that are true omnivores Some fish Mammals Pigs Bears Primates (including human beings) Domestic dogs Some rodents, including mice, rats, squirrels, and chipmunks Opossums Raccoons Foxes Birds Rails Rhea Most gulls Chickens Crows Domestic pigeons http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omnivore And since some animals on this list do not eat meat throughout their lives i still say that dogs CAN live on a vegetarian diet and be healthy!

| I'm sure a dog can live a healthy life being a vegetarian - if you make sure they get all their dietary needs in other foods - but why even go there??? Dogs love meat - and it's natural and healthy for them. I know a lot of vegetarians who feed their dogs meat - mainly from the dog foods they get. I feel that meat is one of the healthiest foods I feed my dog. But, they get a wide variety of other foods too. You know - some dog foods and dog treats are far less healthy than a piece of (poached/boiled) chicken. Chicken is what my dogs get for treats. If you want your dog to be a vegetarian - no problem - just be sure he gets everything he needs in his vegetarian diet. Poor dog!! Carol Jean |

| My vet (holistic) has recommended vegetarian for my little girl. She apparently has a problem with animal protein. She had being seeing other vets including a dermatologist for severe itchy skin problem for about 3 years and only got worse. Now she gets no vaccines, no antibiotics and has been on striclty veggies since october and she's improved 200%..She is almost normal and we will be expanding her diet hopefully soon. We did try fish about 6 weeks ago but within a week she started scratching a lot again so no more.... |

| Dogs can do okay on a meat-free diet (evidence is liver compromised dogs on vegetarian food) but the only way I"d consider feeding a dog all vegetarian is if they had a health problem. There is no reason to do it otherwise and I haven't seen much research on whether it is healthy or not. Even dogs with allergies can eat exotic meat. If there was no way I could feed animal products, Ellie's diet would be packed with protein-rich beans, soy and cottage cheese. This just doesn't seem like the best way to go though.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | No disrespect, but dogs are carnivores - and even your own source states so in multiple places. http://rawfed.com/myths/omnivores.html I'm a pescetarian (eat fish, but not meat), but personally, I would not impose my beliefs about it on my furbutts.
