I was going to ask about this. I saw this in drs foster and smith catalog. It is not a collar but like a room alarm. I considered it as my male carries on barking if people come to the door or if he hears any little noise. Is it safe? It doesnt hurt them?

I can barely read to type. I haven't even finished the thread. The entire time I was reading this I was thinking of my own dear mother. She is now in a hospital going into a nursing home - HOPEFULLY with a future option of returning home, but no guarantee. Her beloved poodle is at home with my dad. This kills them to be separated. I don't think many here - who honestly do love their pets - realize that pets play a more important role than simply being our beloved pets. They are God's angels who keep some people alive. I can't imagine telling my mom to get a different dog or to give up her dog for it's own good. Her dog keeps her alive!! OMG - this just hits so close to home. I am so sorry. And I'm so sorry for some responses that hurt. I felt the "mom connection" through the whole thing (what I've read so far). As I now continue the thread, I will look forward to what will hopefully be a new helpful suggestion or a new solution to your dilemma. You are sooooooo in my prayers. Diane

| We had a barking issue with our Cockapoo about 10 years ago. She is a fantastic dog...but she barked at EVERYTHING and it was driving the neighbors crazy. Diving us crazy too...but we thought it was something we could just put up with...until a neighbor mentioned it. At that point it really wasn't fair to our neighbors to let Copper bark like that. That was our first trip to an animal behaviorist. I felt a little silly booking an appointment...thought it would be like a pet psychologist or something (like in the movies!). Anyway, we did get a bark collar for Copper through the behavioirst's practice and we went through training on when it was appropriate to use it and when not. The idea being that you wouldn't tell a person to never "talk"..so you don't do the same to a dog that you love. They adjusted the "shock" on it to a level that was appropriate for our dog and it was a special collar that was designed not to go off at loud noises other than the dog's own bark. Many of the ones you can buy in the "regular" stores will go off with crazy things like sirens, garage door openers...just weird things. And you don't want the dog getting corrected for something they didn't do wrong as it is very confusing to them. We only put it on when she was outside and honestly, she only wore it for a month and we only had the barking issue resurface once about 7 years later. Out came the collar and she wore it for 1 day. With Piper, we "shushed" her after 3 barks as a wee puppy and now she barks exactly 3 times to alert us about anything. Works for us. But with an older dog that hasn't had that training, you may need to go with a professional's help in order to get it resolved quickly and painlessly for both you and the dog. It wasn't super cheap to do it using the fancy bark collar on Copper and go through a few training sessions, but it sure solved the problem and made our lives much happier. If you do this route, please do make sure that you get a good bark collar and not one of the cheapos at the store. Ours was around $125 10 years ago...the cheapos (which truly did malfunction..had friends that tried them and the dog would yelp when a loud noise would happen) were about $50 at that time. Not sure what is out there now. |

| Joy, I am just now reading this post. First of all I want to apologize to you for the negative or sarcastic responses you got. They were all uncalled for. People can state their opinions but should do it in a kind way. Second, I want you to know that I will lift up you and your family in my prayers. May God keep his loving arms around you and your mom and her precious baby. I know this is a VERY hard time for all of you. Again, I am sorry that some of the yt'ers felt they had to be rude to you.

| I just wanted to thank you all again for your support. My Mom has had a few good days now, and her spirits are up! Maybe all of this worry is premature. I certainly hope so! She is working with Bea diligently. I am checking into training devices, including collars. And I am continueing to investigate surgical procedures as well. For now, Mom is using a big ol' spray bottle! LOL...of all things a squirt of water is at least making Bea think more about whether she should continue barking or not! And it's an INDUSTRIAL bottle, so it reaches about 15 feet! Mom was laughing at Bea's surprise when she got a little wet for 'talking' a little too much! LOL... Thanks again, we are having a good day, so all is happy here!

| To Diane and all those in similar circumstances with their loved ones, or who have lost loved ones. Sometimes, when it rains, it pours. I just keep thinking "Time heals all", this too shall pass.... Love never fails. Enjoy every minute you have with those you have left. Never take anyone or anything for granted. Hugs again, Joy

| I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. In this case, the dog obviously cannot be rehomed. People need to come before animals and if you Mom needs this poodle, that is understandable. I still can't say I would do the surgery because there is no guarantee that the neightbors couldn't hear the bark unless the procedure has changed since then. Have you tried a trainer? So my first post was wrong. I might consider it in this instance. I spoke too soon and I am sorry. I certainly would never want to lose Ellie.

| Hi Joy, I just read half of this thread. I am not going to go into the debarking topic but I just want to say you can still hear them after debarking pretty clear too.I just wanted to suggest, maybe the dog is bored and so barks? What about walking the dog an hour a day or maybe twice a day for half an hour each time? If doggie is tired, it will be too tired to bark? I know this sounds silly but draining his/her energy might actually work? My sister has a maltese who barks a lot too. She is on the hyper side and she barks very loud and at everything like if a towel is moving because of the wind, she barks; if we move the furniture, she barks until we move it back and if we ignore her when she wants attention, she barks; when there is lightning, she barks; when the plane pass by the house, she barks...practically barks all day at the littlest thing...so what we did is walk her. We walk her until she looks tired and is practically pooped It does help although it takes a lot to drain her out.Oh...I just read from the above post..sorry to hear about your Mom *hugs*
