Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Help on Homecooking! Please! Please need advice! Bengi is not crazy about any kibble or dog food and I’ve tried many brands. He will eat it if he’s very hungry, but he would go all day without eating in the hope of getting some other food (and by other I mean human food). He absolutely loves any food that tastes like human food and he’ll devour it. I sometimes homecook for him and try to mix it with the kibble, but he always leaves the kibble behind I’m thinking about feeding him all homecook, because that’s what he likes. But I know that dog food have certain vitamins and stuff they need Let’s say I give him a meal that contains Meat – like ground beef, chicken, or veal. Starch – like brown rice Vegetable – like green beans, carrots, or peas. What type of vitamin supplement should I get to make sure he gets all he needs to be a healthy furbaby??? And how much should I feed him of this homecook meal a day??? I will still leave kibble in his food bowl all day in case he wants to eat it sometime. |

| There are lots of suppelement options but I use an all-in-one recommended by Ellie's nutritionist. You have to get it through a nutritionist or vet. It is just half a scoop a day and all her needs are taken care of. The only thing I don't like is that it is for dogs and the safety standards might be lower than with human vitamins.

I use a book called "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Cats & Dogs", and I use his "healthy Powder" supplement, as many other YT'ers do. There are several supplements that are mixed together to create the powder, which they get a daily dosage of. Then his recipes also call for supplements of Vitamins E, C, & A, plus extra calcium. I also use flax seed oil instead of fish oils for Omega 3's-I use this in place of the vegetable oils in his recipes. If he doesn't have allergies, Flax Oil may be a good choice...if he does, many members recommend the fish oils. For amounts, it is about the same amount as the kibble he is eating, however, remember that homecooked food contains more water than dry kibble, so you'll want to increase the amount a bit. For example, my Milli would eat a little less than 1/2 cup dry kibble daily, so I feed her about 1/2 cup homemade food, plus a few snacks like vegetables, all natural treats, yogurt, cheese, etc. For breakfast, I give each of my two 1/2 a hard boiled egg, plus 1-2" of banana split between them, plus 1 tablespoon cottage cheese or yogurt. I also sometimes change this up and give the egg, and oatmeal with yogurt and/or applesauce mixed in. They love it!

| It is called BalanceIT K (NOT BalanceIT L). You will have to figure out how much your dog should have a day though. If you go to petdiets.com I think they will generate a recipe for you for $25. They use this supplement so they might give you a code to buy it. I have not used one of this site's recipes though, so I don't know how good they are. The site seems to be operated by Ellie's nutritionist though... And if you decide to use this service, please make sure your dog is getting enough calories because Ellie wasn't with her homemade recipe. They might also try to make you use the BalanceIT L and I wouldn't.

| Also I thought I read that giving vitamin A can be dangerous for dogs? So is that not true?

| Some people leave vitamin A out of the healthy powder and give foods rich in beta carotene instead. Excessive vitamin A can cause vitamin A toxicity.

You can add tamari (organic soy sauce) to the recipes, as well as fresh or dried herbs like basil, thyme, oregano, parsley, etc. Skip the garlic in the recipes though-it can be toxic to dogs.

| I forgot to mention that I DON'T supplement vitamin A, even though the healthy powder recipe calls for it-I just use carrots & sweet potatoes in recipes, and rotate frequently.

Ooooh, and I forgot that you can add legumes to the diet to boost protein-my two like kidney beans, split peas, and blackeyed peas, to name a few. I can get 2 cups of beans for something like 40 cents per bag-which makes 6-8 cups of legumes!

I think I got my first round of supplements for around $40-and they lasted about 4 months, I think-and that's for two dogs!
