| My 6 Month old Yorkie Eats too Fast I would appreciate any and all help with my Yorkie. She just eats soooooooo fast and doesn't always chew her food before she starts to swallow. I know she is not that hungry, but she just woofs it down. Three times she scared me so much because the food was caught in her throat. I break up her treats in the morning into small pieces. The other two times she eats I have rice and ground round in the bowl. I never saw a dog inhale her food so fast. She actually has lost her balance the three times that the food got stuck. I just rubbed her neck and throat until it went down. Is there anything I can do to make her eat slower? Sometimes I have just stroked her back calmly telling her to slow down. This seems to help a bit, but not as much as I would like. Please advise. Thanks so much. Angelaine |

| Hmmm unusual...what about hand feeding her one kibble at a time? How big is she?? I dont know if you have to worry about Bloat in small dogs but I know that bloat can kill some dogs that eat too fast and too much...I free feed too so they just nibble all day long when they are hungry and never ever gulp down food like that...even in the morning when the bowl gets refilled they could care less...I would be interested to know what kibble you are using?? | I have been feeding her cooked ground round and rice for her two meals and in the morning I feed her small hard "cookies". She has eaten very fast from the time we got her. She is not bloated at all. Mia must have a very high metabolism because even though I increase her amount of food, she is not gaining anymore weight. The vet says Mia is very healthy and she just was spayed 10 days ago. However, Mia always ate this way. I never thought of asking the vet, but I appreciate the comments and advice. I will try putting something in the middle of her bowl to help her slow down. Hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving. Angelaine |

| Angelaine. My Yorkie does the same thing. I myself almost posted about this. Jersey is just about the same age as your Yorkie. Like you Jersey has done this since 10 weeks when we got her. She eats like she can't get enough. We free feed and she'll take a few pieces and run. I also homecook and she eats a mix of boiled chicken, brown rice, carrots and I mix in dry kibble with it. She scoffs it down but always seems hungry. She's skinny (Atleast I think so) but her weight is fine. She weighs 5 lbs. and not tiny but on the small side. I've had her tested for parasites to be sure that she did not have worms and she came back fine. The only other difference too between her and my other Yorkies is that Jersey is more high strung / nervous. Although, always socialized from a pup still not warm with new people - will stand back barking at them - skiddish is the word I'm lookign for. Not sure if all of this works hand in hand but thought I'd mention it. If you find any answers pls. share them with me. Elaine |

| I will keep you posted on Mia. She is very lovable and isn't high strung. She has a lot of energy, but she does play a lot and we also have an older Yorkie that she plays with. We are going to take her to the vet to check her about her being spayed and I know her blood tests came back normal and healthy so I am going to ask the vet Thanks for your help. Hugs, Angelaine |

Yorkie Talker | My baby eats the way too fast My baby Winnie is 6 month old now and he eats like he is in "hunger game" ! no matter how much we give him, he eats all and eats his brother's when he got a chance! What i noticed is he is getting fatter compare to couple of weeks ago he is growing his bone structure. i was wondering if i should feed him less despite of his "hunger". any suggestion?

| Jaeger is this way too, and he is also 6 months. I know that he was an "oops" litter between the owner's dog and one that the owner saw thrown out of a car and wasn't spayed in time. The owner was in full time college so she free fed the dogs, and I know they got plenty to eat (they were all healthy weights and Jaeger was the biggest one, very solid) but i think with 9 dogs, he just got used to eating really fast. I don't free feed because he's such a gobbler, I'd be worried he'd eat til he puked. When he was younger I gave him 1/8-1/4 c. 3 times a day, and now I give him 1/8-1/4 2x a day plus veggies/fruit at noon. I tried putting his kibble in a kong, but what helped us the most was hand feeding him. I use meal times as training times and he gets a few kibbles at a time. Oh, I just wanted to clarify-Jaeger is a daschund/yorkie mix at 8.1 lbs, so I wouldn't take my advice regarding quantity of food-yours may need less. Jaeger's yorkie dad was 7 lbs, and his daschund mom was 12 lbs, and Jaeger himself is 21 inches long-gotta keep a little meat on his bones. At 6.5 lbs, we could see his all of his ribs. |
