| What Heartworm Medication? Shame to say but Pepper has never been put on heartworm pill... After this year's booster shots he had his blood tested for heartworm and can start the pills anytime. I know I can order them cheaper online for cheaper than my vet charges...What kins though? I understand he needs to take 1 pill every 30 days? Thanks!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i recommend interceptor. when did he have the test done? if it was a few months ago and he hasn't been on a monthly pill then i'd just wait till april. Do the test again, and then put him on the heartworm preventative right away.

| My 3 are on Revolution but that is topical and takes care of a few other things too. My Bull Terrier is on Heart Guard but the smallest does is UP TO 25 lbs I think that is to much for my littl ones.

| Conner is on Heartguard. It is up to 25 pounds, so my vet recommends a half a Heartguard a month. It lasts me a year!!!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | I do not agree that breaking a heartworm pill in half is safe. The medication is put in that chewy pill but is NOT evenly distributed. Its possible for them to get all the medication one month and then nothing the next. Which could open a window to get heartworms if the right mosquito comes along.

You are exactly right, Heartguard can't be cut. As a rule, only pills that are scored in half have the medication evenly distributed and can be cut. That applies to human medicine, too. Lady gets Interceptor. She has seizures and it is the safest one for her. Heartguard supposedly has been known to lower the seizure threshold. | |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | good choice. i like how the weight ranges on interceptor are smaller then others so i don't feel i'm over medicating.

| When I gave it to my dogs I used heartguard. However, I took my dogs off of it, and instead just get them tested every 6 months. I'd rather not put all those chemicals into my dogs.

| I'd much rather prevent heartworms than chance getting them. I've opened a dog's (dead) heart infested with heart worms before and I don't know how any blood was able to fill that heart. The worms were spilling out into the lungs. They were packed in there so thick..it was just a wad of them. If your dog actually gets heart worms, your going to have to put much stronger chemicals into its body to kill the worms, and even then there can be complications. A dog being treated for heartworms must be kept in a kennel for at least 2 months because to much activity can cause the dying worms to travel into the lungs. This can kill the dog. Many dogs have died during heartworm treatment. I just want you to know there are major risks with contracting heartworms.

| I can understand why a lot of owners think they should half a heartguard because if you don't know it's not evenly distributed and you have a tiny dog it would seem to make sense. But I can't believe a vet would recommend giving half of one. They should know better
