| It is surprising tha a vet would recommend splitting the dose. There is no way to know if the med has been evenly distributed. Ivermectin (heartguard) kills all baby worms that are 45 days old and younger. If you miss a month there will be a 15 day period where your dog could be affected by mosquitos.

| Does anyone know what the safest heartworm med is? I have heard good things about Revolution but I always thought they added something to kill fleas and we don't usually use flea preventative. I've been thinking now that the Selamectin automatically kills fleas but it isn't really a bigger does than the other brands. What do you all think? Interceptor or Revolution?

| I think I will have to have a nice loooooong conversation about this with Ellie's vet. The poor girl... This is from http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=488 What is the LD50? (lethal dose to 50% of population - this dose is typically available for lab animal species upon which the product has been tested. It is expressed in milligrams of drug per kilogram of animal body weight. The higher the number, the less toxic the product is) Revolution: Oral LD50 is greater than 1600 mg/kg in the rat Heartgard Plus, Iverheart Plus: Lethal dose to rats is 50 mg/kg Sentinel and Interceptor: Symptoms of tremors and incoordination result at 19 times recommended dose Revolution looks safer when you read this. The only drawback for me is that it doesn't kill roundworms or hookworms.

Nor does it kill fleas much longer that 2 weeks. Delilah is on the Revolution but we will be changing to something else pronto! I am having to give Capstar in between doses. It makes me wonder if the heartworm preventative is working

| Check your health contract You might want to check your health contract...this is a clause in Gizmo's. "If a heartworm preventative containing Ivermectin (Heart Guard) is given to a puppy weighing less than 4lbs. all health guarantees are void. We recommend the preventative, Interceptor (Cibaglogy) for yorkies of all sizes." Oh, and thanks for the reminder! I had to give Gizmo his dose today.

i had a beagle/mix who got heartworms she was the best dog! The vet gave us the option of having a treatment done but he said dogs her size usually dont make it. she was small. He said they usually go into shock during the treatment and die. He said it was our choice tho. So we let her continue to live her life normal. Then my mom and stepdad got a divorce and we moved down here to Texas and we had to stay with my Grandma for a while she wouldnt let us keep pets so we had my great aunt take care of them till we could get on our feet. She one day took them to the pound and didnt call us they put Misty to sleep because she had heartworms and they wont adopt out a dog like that. My great Aunt called us after she did it. right after that we moved here to my moms BFs house and could have certainly had her here! its soo sad!

| I have been studying further and I see the Revolution has a higher death rate than some. I will not be switching to it after all.

| I am thinking of starting the Heartgard mainly cause they have a pill....afraid Delilah would not chew the tabs.
