| He hates home grooming. I've tried everything! My Otis has never been to a pro groomer. I've heard too many stories. A very nice woman from yorkie talk offered to have her mobile groomer do my Otis, but she lived in another state. It was a very nice offer but I still thought I could manage. I've tried calm, soothing talk and mood. I even bought a grooming table arm. He tries to climb up me when he's on the table. I've never nipped him while trimming him, I don't understand his terror. It's usually a day long process because we take breaks. I just can't get him to relax. When he hears the shears cutting the hair, he frieks! Does anyone have any helpful hints, tips, or know of a mobile groomer that they trust. I live in Plainfield, IN. The westside of Indpls. I'm getting desperate. I know I shouldn't be so protective, but the stories I've heard are terrifying. I've also witnessed several things while observing the groomers at petsmart that I find unacceptable. HELP!

| I'm the same way but is because I had allreay a bad experience with my Pheobe so I do it my self, it will take time, I don't use the table, I train Pheobe to lie in my lap, turning the body from side to side, I also don't give her a chewie or a toy, she needs to understand that this is a serious time. Praise him calmly for every few seconds that he is calm and cooperative. And don't ever let him convince you to put down the comb, brush or clippers when he says so, that only teaches him that if he squirms and struggles, you'll stop, also how is you project your energy, it is calm, assertive, not nervous or insecure, dog can pick up that energy. I also try to do it when she is calm, resting etc.You can do it |

| I don't use clippers - I use scissors with my fingers as a guide. I give Ferdinand a chew toy and he sits still the whole time. He doesn't like me going near his ears, but after about 2 times, he was fine. I only use electric clippers for his butt so I can trim it really short. He used to be totally terrified and it took us almost all day also. But now that I just use scissors and I give him a chew toy, he's fine. I also tell him "good boy" and give him treats periodically throughout the process so he learns to be nice.

| I used treats the first couple of times I groomed my furbabies. I had to give them a lot the first time.. but then each time they'd get less and less and now they look forward to their one treat at the end. It kept them distracted while I busted out the dreaded hair dryer! |

| Thanks - I'll work on the calm assertiveness and not giving in when he's fought me continuously for 30 minutes. He's very stubborn (terrier) It's worth whatever I have to do and however long it takes to be able to do it myself at home. Sometimes when a friend comes over I'll ask them to help me while I trim his face and feet. Thanks everyone, Wish me Luck!!!!

| My girl would go to a great groomer once a month. But I would comb her and brush her teeth at home regularly. The best bit of advice my groomer gave me when Molly was a pup was to get one of those rubber shelf liner mats. Have Molly stand on it for grooming. She said Molly will respect the mat. And it is a good safety device to keep her from slipping. It worked like a charm. Molly knew it was time and she turned out to LOVE being groomed. Also, when we would travel, I would bring the mat and she would know what was up!

Lots of treats and "good boys". When he gets tired of me messing with one area, I change areas and come back to that spot. He eventually gets bored and goes to sleep.

| most groomers will let you stay and watch if you'd feel more comfortable. then maybe they can give you some pointers on keeping him calm while your grooming him |

| Hi, I had a boy who I couldn't trim, he had never had a bad experience, but he would attack the clippers. My vet said you could give him a 1/2 a benadryl to make him sleepy (he's 12 pounds). I gave him the recommended dose and when he started to get sleepy I trimmed him. He didn't fight too much, and learned that it wasn't a big deal. Now I don't have any trouble unless I trim his face or legs, he just doesn't like them being done. Whitney |

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | Lillie was the same way, she absolutly hated her baths, I was trying to bathe her in the sink, not sure why she hated the sink. So I put her in the bath tub with me, I covered myself with a hand towel and just held her tight to show her she was safe. It really worked! Now I put her in the tub without me and use the sprayer hose and she does just fine. I dont know if she was just scared of the sink or what. Good luck to you! |
