YorkieTalk Newbie! | need advice for clipping nails, puppy is scared Our puppy is almost 6 months old, suddenly he is becoming so frightened of getting his nails clipped and he's also afraid of the scissors/clippers when I try to trim him. He shakes and runs to hide. I try to hold him down to cut his nails but I cant hold him still enough and I am afraid to hurt him. He only weighs 4 pds. I dont know if I am making it worse by trying to hold him down ( I dont want to traumitize him, or am I letting him get the upper hand? The vet says he his being a big baby?? What am I suppose to do, he scratches us so badly, they really do need to be cut. Any suggestions?? Oh and we have never cut a nail and made him bleed. |

| A good time to clip the nails is right after a bath. You can wrap him in a towel and just expose one paw at a time. Maybe try getting him used to doing it that way, if he senses that you are afraid to hurt him, he will act afraid too. They are very intuitive that way. I had one who was resistant for awhile, and I did this, and only did a couple nails at a time, (and then a couple more the next day, etc) and gave a treat each time. Was it always this way, or were you able to clip his nails before without any resistance?

| Well if he suddenly got worse, did you quick him? Happens every once in a while.. Scruffs used to be super good about nail trims, then he got so bad he made an ear piercing screech, but now he is back to being good again. I recently purchased the PediPaws nail grinder from Petsmart and I am very happy with the results. He struggles less and I can get his nails shorter without ever making them bleed. You can still make them bleed with the PediPaws but I was able to go a lot shorter than with the clippers.

| I agree, the Pedicure is an easy way to get the nails done without much stress. If the towel doesn't work, place him between your knees with his back to you. This gives you both hands to hold his paws and trim the nails.

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Thanks everyone, no he was not always this way but he never has liked his nails trimmed. One day he just acted so frightened, but its not just of the nail clippers but the scissors and hair clippers also. He just became frightened all of a sudden. I will try the pedipaws but I would bet money on it that he will be afraid of the noise. I am starting to think that he is just becoming nervous about these situations, because when I brought him to the vet the last time he crawled up to my neck to hide and started shaking, when she tried to take him from me he snarled at her ??? I will try clipping his nails a few at a time after the bath also, I guess I need to keep working with him. |

| Hi. well I am having the same problem with Dustie...He is 10 months old..I did clip his nails when he was a pup..and have never hurt him but now he just really wont let me...he gets so uptight...and this morning I thought I would have another go...But hey wild animal comes to mind...I tried everything,,and even asked my hubby to hold him...but he seriously wants to bite...he turns into this crazy animal...we are both really surprised by his attitude...and we know if he can get our hands he will nip. I have decided to get our Vet to do it...its not worth the stress. I really can't understand why he has got this way either...I really didn't want him to get the better of me..but he has at the moment..!! I have owned 4 yorkies over the years and this is the first one which I seriously think wouldn't hesitate in biting...even though a lot of the time he wants to be so loving. Chrisann

| I'm having the same trouble with Sophie! She absolutely hates to clip her nails, and is terrified of the noise of PediPaws! I'll try the towel trick the next time she takes a bath!

| Since I posted that, Scruffs became SO STRESSED from the Pedipaws... I almost stopped using it. Then I used chicken as a reward. Now he sometimes squirms but mostly sits still. If your dog is having trouble try treats!!

| I found that just turning on the pedipaws upset Hedley, so I just got a pair of basic scissor action nail clippers, armed myself with treats, husband held Hedley and I treated then clipped, and it was all over quite quickly. But on utube there is a video showing how to clip on a grooming table whilst training using a clipper and treats. Im sure if you do a search you will find it. |
