| Pulling Ear hair? How much should I be pulling out? Until the insides are totally hairless or just before that? I was always scared of pulling out the hair thinking it would hurt, but nope, just a few at a time and she's fine. The only thing is that it tickles her sometimes and she will shake her head, then I have to wait and flip her ear back and go back in. I've started to notice a bit of wax build up which is why I started doing this. No stinky smell, but there will be if I don't do this now. So it is almost to completely hairless inside. Should I keep going or stop now?

| I was just thinking the same thing. Is there a special powder to put in the ears prior to pulling the hair? How much do you use and how much hair should you pull at one time? I have always had the groomer do this but the last time his ears were RAW and very red. I think she pulled to hard and too much. Needless to say she will never see us again. I also don't want to hurt him so is there a specific way to pull the hair. I was planning on using my fingers. Also, how frequently does the hair need to be pulled? Thanks so much! |

| I was hoping there would be more responses to help us out. I remember reading here before about ear pulling but can't find the threads now. But yes, there is ear powder you can buy at petco, etc. Uni's ears aren't that waxy so I can just do it by hand, but if your pup's ear have a lot of wax, you can't get a good grip, and that's what the powder is for. I just pulled about 5-10 hairs at a time. Uni's hairs are very thin, I don't think it bothered her much.

| Just pull out the hairs coming out of the ear canal. You're lucky Uni let's you pick her ear hairs out. I can't go anywhere near Mimi's inside ear...I think her last groomer pulled the hair out all at once w/ a hemostat. They grab the bulk of hair & twist it couple of times & rip it out. Her ears were red & inflammed for days. About the powder, only apply it lightly & on the outside cuz my vet told me some dogs come in w/clogged ears from ear powder...& the owners wonder, 'I don't know why he doesn't come when I call his name anymore'. lol

| Oh man! I can't believe someone would do that to Mimi! Poor thing! Good thing I didn't buy the ear powder. Uni's ears are not too waxy, this is the first time i've felt like she needed a good "pullin" and she's 2 1/2! I always smell her ears too, to make sure there's no infection or anything in there. I don't know if anyone remembers, but I fostered a 1 yr old little tiny guy a while back. He had an ear infection when I picked him up. Oh boy did that ear stiiiiink!!!! So I know what it shouldn't smell like. LOL So I got most of the hair out of the ear canal. I'll double check tomorrow. Thanks for the tips!

| heheh.. funny thing about the ear powder and clogging.. The powder helps the hair to come out easier, and you need to pull out the hair form the ear canal, specially inside. of course, use just enough powder to make the hair come off easier but it makes it a lot easier... common sense... clean afterwords. The regular use of the ear cleaning solution after every bath helps to keep the ear free of wax.

| Thanks for all your tips. I'm still kind of scared. I just don't want to do anything to hurt the love of my life. Capt Noonie, hanks for your advice about just pulling a few at a time. How frequently does this have to be done? It's been about 6 weeks I think since he had all his hair inside ripped out by that awful groomer and left him extremely red and raw but it does seem to have grown back quite a bit. I smelled his cute little ears and don't smell a thing. I also have the ear cleaning pads. Someone wrote to use them regularly but about how often? Thanks again for answering my questions. |

YT Addict | Glad this thread was posted. I've been wondering about the ear hair myself. I take Harley to petsmart and have him groomed. They clean the ears but I was looking at them the other day and they still have alot of hair in them. I thought cleaning the ears also meant plucking out the hairs but maybe not. I'm going to have a hard time doing this myself. He gets very aggressive with me just brushing him. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. |

After you use the ear cleaning pads, make sure the ear is completely dry. I just clean their ears w/cotton & ear cleaner, then just wipe again w/a dry cotton ball. The hairs inside the ear canal should also be easy to pull out (little by little) & usu doesn't hurt them.

Since Harley doesn't like brushing, I think you'll need to train him to get used to grooming. Put him on a table or bathroom counter/vanity & give him fav treat, introduce him to all the tools, let him smell it. Give him more treats & praises. Brush him a little, if he squirms, stop, try it again later. It might take awhile for him to get used to it. At this stage, if there's a mat or tangle anywhere, it's good to just cut it off. If you try to work it out & if it hurts him, he'll associate grooming time = ouch time. It's best to keep it a very positive experience. Same thing w/ pulling ear hair, little at a time.

| Thanks for the info about the powder. How frequently does the hair need to be pulled? Every month..other month? Also, if water accidentally gets in the ear during a bath, if I blow dry his ear on low is that ok? Thanks so much! |

| That's fine, also a drop of alcohol will dry it out. But, a good ear cleaner with a drying agent is much better.
