| Question for those with males How do you groom your boys goodies? I've never cut his wee wee hairs but I've noticed over the last few months that in between bathing, Peyton's wee wee hairs get really gross. I wanted to trim the hair down .. How far can I go? Does it have to be completely covered in hair? lol He's my first little boy (as far as small dogs & dogs with long hair goes). Thanks!

| I have 3 boys and trim the longer hair at the tip of the penis. Nothing too drastic, just enough so that when they do piddles it doesn't drip. I'm sorry if that sounds rude but it's the only way I can think to describe it.

| this is going to sound gross but i grab his privates with my fingers and what ever is on the opposite side of my fingers i cut off. Only because when they piddle if it's to long the hairs tend to stick to eachother and get stiff.

| I use the trimmer on half of his belly, (the half that is gross!!)... I can't stand him smelling like pee, so that has worked for us... I cut it pretty short, around the penis area, between the legs and under part of the rib cage if that makes any sense... pretty cleaner I have to say! and allows me to keep the "long hair look" without the smell... Hope that helps!

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I keep Captain's area short so that it doesn't get all tangled up and start to smell like pee...I just cut it short enough that there is just hair on that area but none hanging down so there is no dripping!! It has really helped him to smell like pee or get any mats down there!!

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | I shave the whole belly area including the penis area so it doesn't smell. Never had a problem doing it and it really helps keep boys cleaner.

| Thanks everyone! I trimmed the hair around his winky but I will shave a bit in front of it by the rib cage. I just didn't know if his winky was shaved that it would possibly get dirt in it or something.. I don't know how to explain it..

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Carefully...that's how I do it. I keep the end trimmed in between groomings. At groomings mine get sanitary shaves which includes their bellies...and hmmmm....goodies.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey's breeder suggested leaving about an inch or so of hair on the tip of the penis area to direct the flow. This is called a "pee string", and is very effective at keep the urine off the coat especially with long hair dogs. I've read many threads where members complained after cutting this area too short the dog started peeing all over his coat, and this caused some real problems.

| That's very interesting. I'd cut Button's hair on his penis short as the long hair seemed to be guiding the wee to his side onto the long hair there xx Meggie |

That is exactly what I've been told and that's what I've been doing for a long time. I sometimes dress him and if his wee wee hair is completely shaved off ,he would pee straight into his shirt and his belly. So I started leaving a little bit of hair just at the tip, like a string and when he pees it flows downward like a "Fountain" I just took a picture so you can get an idea.it still stays pretty clean and it doesnt "stick" Just dont leave lots of hair... Also a groomer we had used to do this and explained that many dogs just pee straight onto their coats/belly instead of the ground or pee pad.. Genie Cookie,Lola,Angel,Lucky | |
