This is true. When I cut the hair off Yogi's shaft it gets all over his side coat. Now I leave the hair on the shaft a inch long and he is not getting his coat as nasty in between bathes. Of course, if your Yorkie in not in long coat then it does not hurt to trim the hair short on the shaft.
