| Cutting Nails Results in Scream I can't cut my puppy's nails because he screams right when I put pressure on the nail to cut it (like half-way cut). I mean it's not a whimper its a full out scream. I know that if I follow through with cutting it I would NOT have cut the quick... I guess I'll have to dremel the nails... He is fine with me touching his paws and massing them, etc. Any suggestions?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | To insure you're not reaching the quick trim only at the tip. If that is where you're cutting...ignore the screams and trim any way. Reward with a treat afterward. I have fought dogs to allow me to do this...they learned they weren't going to win this battle...it could be over in 5 minutes or 15.

| If you know you are hurting her then you need to go ahead and do it. I have a screamer when I brush her. Its her way of not wanting you to do that. But if you hate doing it the new nail dermel would probably be the best thing for you.

| Oh, I hear you! My Kalani is such a 'drama queen' when it comes to cutting his nails! I just purchased a Peticure Petite and though he still fusses a bit he does much better and I have fewer heart attacks

| Yes, it's an electric file with guard holes on it so you don't get their hair caught in the file. I bought mine used from a YTer but they do have a website. Here's a pic of it.

| Whew! I just did Bentley's nails with my dremel. I used the lowest setting - 2 - and he screamed just twice. I kept having to hold him in such a way that was probably quite uncomfortable for him but at least I was able to do his nails without traumatizing the poor guy. About 5 minutes ago I was done and then I went out for a smoke. When I came in and relaxed on the couch he came right up to me and jumped on the couch and layed on me. So at least he's not associating the traumatic experience with ME... I was firm and never wavering when he kept fighting me and trying to run away. Hopefully now his nails are short enough so they wont click-clack on the kitchen floor. If they are, I'll redo them in one week. **huge sigh of relief** HUGS Brittany and Bentley

| I know the feeling. I've tried clipping Mr. Biggs' nails twice, and both times he screamed bloody murder! Ever since then, I just take him to the groomer to get his nails clipped. lol

| Glad Breny's nail are done this time. And at least it was easier for you with that new dremel. Maybe that is the trick.

Senior Yorkie Talker | My puppy did the same thing, I use to tell my neighbors ahead of time when I'm cutting his nails so they won't think that I'm killing him People in my apartment complex call him the "little boy who cried wolf" His nails were never cut prior to me getting him so I clipped the nails his first day home because they were sharp and would snag on the carpet and my clothes. I've never cut the quick or anything, he just doesn't like getting his nails trimmed. Some days he lays on his back and goes to sleep without a peep, and other days he does the flat out scream at the top of his lungs, while I trim his nails. Same thing with his hair, I would brush him with a soft bristle baby brush, or pretend like I was brushing him with the tip of my finger, and he would still scream. He's just a very dramatic my little drama king People are shocked when they hear the loud sounds that come out of his barely 2lb body. But he does fine with getting his nails trimmed and being brushed now unless he decides to go into one of his moods

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have started to cut my girls nails as with 4 it is so expensive to take them in every month. I did Cali's Tuesday and she put up a fuss, but on the last nail, she screamed like I killed her, I looked and I was no where near the quick. Freaked me out so now I am afraid to do the others. Since others have had the same problem I guess I need to toughen up and try again.

| I bought a Dremel at Walmart and it has been one of the best $19.97 that I have spent! lol It's the BATTERY OPERATED kind and it brings a charger so you wont be buying new batteries! I use the lowest setting sometimes I use the #2 . Lola our Maltese doesnt mind it at all,Angel is ok with it but my tiniest one has a big problem with it lol He cries in a low screaching sound and I KNOW it doesnt hurt him. But the reason he does this is because he is traumitized because of an old injury. He got his nail caught somewhere and he yanked and yanked and almost the entire nail was ripped off. I mean it was really bad dangling by a thread. I thought for sure he'd lose the whole nail. But it grew back so everytime I sand his nails down he remembers The good thing is I dont have to do this too often! I do this like every other month. It's that good. When I clipped I had to do this at elast 2 times a month. DO NOT buy the electric Dremel with cord! It is extremely powerful and will deffinately rip the nail off ! The battery charged Dremel is low powered and great Genie |

| I do have the electric dremel and having it on the lowest setting (2) is just fine. If you don't hold the nail right against the sander yes the nail can flip from the force of the sander but it just takes a little bit of practice to get it right. It did not rip the nail off.
