| cotton coat mats..to cut or not to cut?? ideas needed please. So i have been having a dilema over Koda. He is a soft cotton coat. and as we all know, it is so hard to keep up. I bathe him once a week and switch between Minksheen and Perfect Coat oatmeal shampoo & Perfect Coat pink lilac moisturizing/conditioning rinse which is supposed to help w/ matting problems. I love all three products, but can't keep the mats away. We just received Top Performance GLOCOAT conditioner/detangler from our GE buddy and are hoping it will help us more. He just seems to mat when you look at him the wrong way! What can I do? As I said he gets bathed 1 time week. Gets combed w/ a metal comb then brushed w/ a slicker brush DAILY (with the exception of the past 2 days). And within 2-3 hours he has those darn mats starting again. With all the playing outside during those 2 days he is an absolute mess. I sat for an hour tonight spraying the GLOCOAT on the mats and tried working them out starting from the end and working my way closer to him. I a getting nowhere! I don't want to get him shaved but I know these can not feel good to him. Last time when i got him a puppy cut he actually acted like he felt better! Which I don't blame him Also I have been using a silk lined harness vest to hopefully help since under his harness is where so many tend to start. Any suggestions? Should I take him and get a puppy cut (summer is coming) If I do that can I leave his head/chest the same as it is now and just cut his "trunk" so to say, and leave his legs longer? Would that look crazy?!?! I just don't want to lose his hair all the way. He is so beautiful in my eyes! Also right now his under belly is shaved down close trying to help. What do I do? I want to do what's best for Koda So sorry this got so long, I just wanted to get a clear pic of whats going on and my feelings in it. Here are a few pics of him recently and tonight to show what his length is now. the one where he is sitting pretty really shows the extent of his mats he got just the past 2 days on his chest. He really isn't that big. I just feel like a bad Mommy. I try to keep the mats away, I just can't seem to Please help Koda feel/look better TIA |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have the sane problem with Cali and now Roxie is starting to mat bad too. Cali scratches so bad that I cannot keep up with the matts. I have been thinking of a puppy cut too but so many of her matts are close to the skin and I wonder if a puppy coat would mat too.

| Chelsea has that cottony coat as well! It's really so frustrating! I have tried everything but the matts just keep coming back !! I had to have her cut short this weekend. The groomer cut her face way too short for my taste. I've gotten used to it already but it took me a few days. |

| Here are some pictures of Jamie in a puppy cut! He is not shaved but his coat is about 4 or 5 inches. He had a really bad puppy coat that matted like CRAZY. Now that he's cut shorter it's so much easier to brush his hair so now I comb him like 3 times a days and he almost never gets a matt. Jamie 1 Resized.JPG Napsak 3 Resized.JPG

| I keep Sophie's body short and her face/legs shaggy. I like it that way and I think she does too. I cut her myself. Most recently we did 1/2 inch on her body and the top of her head. We have also done 3/4 inch. In the winter I stick to about an inch though. |

| Erin, Where does Koda mat? Samira has a cotton coat too. We have been at our witts end also!! She gets mats on her belly and her lower sides. I took the clippers to her and cut this area short...about 2 in long. Then left her back and sides long so she looks like she still has a long coat. We just did it on Monday... and it seems better. She still get's brushed every day. I use Ice on Ice or GloCoat or Ruffout...all seem to work about the same. Good luck!!! Lorene

| Have you tried using something other than the slicker brush? I have heard that is not good to use on a Yorkie coat? I think it breaks the hair. I'm not sure, but we've never used one on the furbuts. I think you could get more help and suggestions in the grooming section. I second the suggestion to use Ice on Ice when brushing, it really works well.

| hard to deal with those cotton coats My Cricket also had a cottony coat. I keep her short and neat and we are both much happier. She had a coat to the floor when I showed her, but now we are both so much happier! If you want to groom her yourself, I made a great yorkie grooming video: "How to Groom Your Pet Yorkie at Home". It is 2 hours, 2 minutes long. It explains in very detailed, simple to understand, common sense ways to care for your yorkies coat at home. It is made for the at home pet owner who knows nothing about grooming. It covers nail trimming, foot pad shaving, ear hair plucking and ear canal cleaning, how to trim out the eye corners between the eyes, how to clip the sanitary area, how to tip the ears. I show 3 different hair styles for the body (long to the floor "traditional" look, puppy cut, and schnauzer type "personality" clip) and a few different head styles. How to put up the top knot, and a newer style of topknot that will really stay in, and a rounded cute "teddybear" face and head style. I show how to empty the anal glands, and show the bathing and drying. I explain all about using the grooming equipment properly, what to buy, where the groomers shop for the lowest prices around. I stress common sense and safety. THIS IS NOT FOR SHOW DOGS OR PROFESSIONAL GROOMERS. I have been a professional groomer for 17+ years now. I show a few of the important things over and over so you can see from different angles. I use 3 different yorkie models. My DVD's have chapters so you can skip to what you need to see. I have them on my yorkie website (see signature below) and I will give all Yorkie Talk members a $10.00 off discount for a limited time. The website price is $39.95 + $3.50 shipping. Members here will get it for a total of $33.45 which includes the shipping fee. I accept pay pal and US POST OFFICE money orders. Feel free to PM me if you are interested. The discount is for a LIMITED TIME ONLY as long as my current supply lasts. Sue& Cricket Quote:

| Firstly I would stop using a slicker brush on him. A slicker brush on a yorkie breaks the ends causing a lot of damage and causes them to matt up easily. Use a pin brush and a comb. It sounds like his coat is damaged, a fresh start will work wonders. I don't have any pictures of my yorkies cut down as I keep them in full coats but I did just give my maltese girl, Sugar a cut. Her hair was damaged and so broken that she was matting up and it made it difficult to get a brush through. I shaved her body and left the hair on her face, tail and legs long. I cut the hair on her body to 1/4 of an inch and I really like the length, no too long, not too short but cut short enough for a fresh start which results in no matting. I did the same thing with my yorkie Scampers when his hair was damaged from a shampoo and now his hair is grown and matt free ever since. Here are her pictures....

| overdue reply....sorry ;) Hello everyone who responded! I want to update this as I feel like an idiot I DO NOT use a slicker brush on my furkiddos. I use a metal comb and a 2 sided brush, when i said slicker I meant to say soft bristle brush!! I don't know whatever possesed me to come up with slicker!! I don't even own one of those I had a Petedge book I just looked through looking at brushes/combs and grooming products before posting the original post and maybe because it was 2:30 am and I was tired it just stuck in my head ACK please don't think I use that!!! What I ended up doing w/ Koda is shaving his belly about 3/4 inch. I had to cut into 2 of the mats on his shoulders BUT he is now MAT FREE and has not had any AT ALL! I have been combing/brushing him 2x a day now instead on just once a day using the Glocoat. Also cut down on the clothes wearing and he has been wearing his new silk lined harness vest which I believe has helped wonders Koda looks and feels (I believe) better. Now I need to get up the courage to work on his ears, lol! They look humungous right now but i am scared to cut and they will look all choppy & funny Maybe I should just take him and get groomed professionaly But I really want to learn to do this myself. I guess it will always grow out right?!? Thanks ever so much for all the help, tips & pics I have posted a response to everyone below. As I don't know how to do the multiple quotes in a single post.... Lorene, Koda mats bad under his front legs, kinda of the armpit area I would call it. Also his belly, but I shaved it to 3/4 inch and it's great now. It also gets bad on his shoulders. I think wearing shirts doesn't help I have been using his new silk lined harness you made for him whenever he goes out and not putting shirts on, on a daily basis. Also been using the Glocoat when we comb & brush 2x daily, it smells so good too! I am going to look up a pic of Samira, do you have a pic of her w/ her cut like this?? Tasha07x...Baily looks so cute in his puppy cut! I agree when Koda had a puppy cut I think he felt so much better too Patti...I know when we had Koda in his puppy cut he didn't mat at all. He was so soft and silky feeling we/he loved it Chelseababy...I'll have to look up some pics of your babies new do Rebelbelle...Jamie looks adorable! Anne...Maravilhosa is such miracle in more ways than one Sophies mama...I think thats what I would like to do to. Face and legs a little longer than body. Would be a lot cooler for him in the summer too Aprillove...I think they moved this to the grooming sect for me Suencricket2...I looked over this on your link a week or 2 ago! Sounds great and I will be contacting you within the next 2 weeks to order this. I think it will be a great deal of help to me MyTrixie143...Sugar is gorgeous!! I love the cut |
