| Such a fuss. Will I ever be able to take Annie anywhere [B]We have to go to Chicago for a week. I so hate to leave Annie in the kennel again..but no matter what I try I can't trust that she will stay clam enough to fly or even stay in a hotel without me right at her side. Annie is almost 2 years old now and spoiled rotten, she has such seperation axienty that I am about to lose my mind. I tried the herbal calming drops from the vet 5 drops a day..but they did nothing. I just bought the Quiet Moments from Petsmart and we gave it to her in the car..and it did nothing. When have been taking her for a ride in the car every night and every night she whines and shakes getting louder and louder until I am so far out of my mind I think one of these times I won't find my way back. She gets nuts when we leave her home and she doesn't want to go in the car.. Are you suppose to give the quiet Moments every day to build in their blood or just when you take them out? I have been leaving her at the vet's kennel when we have to go away..but I really don't want to leave her there for a whole seven days. Can anyone give me any ideas on how to calm her down. We have an hour car ride to the airport and then a 2 hour plane ride...and lord knows how I will ever leave her in the hotel even for an hour without her barking and screaming her head off. I know it is our fault because she is so spoiled there is just me and my hubby so no kids or other dogs here and we are so far out in Green Acres that we are her world. When the vet told us about the herbel "natural: drops she said if they didn't work she would give me something to sedate her. I don't want Annie sedated all the time..I just want her to calm down some...I am sure the shaking and screeching can't be good for her either. The minute I start to get dressed to go out she starts crying and shaking.. Somebody HELP! |

| Jake used to shake and whine a little when he would see me getting dressed for work. He also didn't like riding in the car. I started leaving the house several times throughout the day, taking my keys and just going outside for 2-3 minutes at first and then slowly increasing the time. I work in the eves so I am home with him all day. Then, to get him used to car rides, I would give him a special toy and/or treats that he got only in the car so that he would associate being in the car with something good. I would take him on short rides, like to the corner and back and increase the time. My daughter lives about an hour away, so we take him with me whenever we go to visit. Now, he LOVES riding in the car and mostly looks out the window or sleeps. He doesn't shake or act afraid. In fact, he gets very excited if I ask him if he wants to go bye-bye. He is very rarely left alone, but he does really well with it now. You just have to be consistent and try to make her understand that you WILL be back and give her some kind of reward that she only gets in the car. Good luck!

| We have tried the going outside for a few minutes at a time. I would say I am going to get the mail and then come back in and give her a treat when I take her oput of her crate. I did that for about a week and I thought it was working because she stopped barking finally. I also tried taping her when we wqent out for an hour or longer (I read that on here) she did stop the screeching after about 15 minutes according to the tape. We have started taking her for a short ride in the car every night and usually will stop at the lake and have a treat for her there..share a few french fries (very special for her) she is fine until we get back in the car then she starts the whinning and shaking again. We have been doing that for about 3 weeks and it is getting no better. I first tried putting her in a soft crate thinking she woudl feel secure and no way..she wants to be on my lap and she still whines. So I tried those Quiet Time Pills but they don't seem to do much good. I don't know what I am going to do..we have to be in Chicago the second week in August and I hate leaving her in a kennel for all that time.. Quote:

| I wouldn't want to leave her that long either. Maybe she feels sick in the car. I would ask the vet for suggestions since you've tried everything else. I've never had to medicate Jake, he just got over his fear. I think at first he was associating the car with going to the vet. But, once I started taking him places or just for rides, he was fine and he loves it. I'm sorry, I wish I had more advice for you. Maybe someone else will come along and be able to help.

| get them use to it We travel a lot, at first it is new and scary, but the more you go the more they like to go..if you had a baby would you leave it at home, i am sure the answer is no..the baby would get use to a different bed, different places and so on, so will a dog..mine love to travel..and do it very well... we do not fly, but go in the truck and camper all over...went for a month this summer...lots of driving... |

| I've gone through this with a couple of Yorkies now. My first one did much better when we got a second dog. I have a female now who hates going in the car. We have 2 Yorkies, and the male is a great traveler. The female does much better in our motorhome than in the car. She is also improving on the airplane, but she is over 2 and a half years old now, and has traveled a lot. One alternative is to get a house sitter/pup sitter, someone who knows her. That way she can stay in her own environment and will feel secure with someone paying attention to her. Good luck. |
