| Spay/Neuter?? I am new to this forum and have a question. We have rescued a yorkie little girl about 1.5-2 years. She weighs in at 4 lbs. I am on the fence about having her spayed. I am not planning on breeding for sales or anything, but thought about other babies for our family. We love her so much. I want her to be healthy first and foremost. My concern for her is that she is so little and if the a pregnancy could possible hurt her. Can I have some thoughts on this to help me make a decision? Thanks |

| She is too small to breed. It would be in her best interest to have her spayed.

| Thanks for the feedback! I think she is too small also. That settles that. No puppies for Lucy. She is too precious to me to take any type of chance with her health. |

| Good Girl. Too much can happen, the worst would be losing your girl.

I agree with the others about spaying her. She will be much healthier as you will never have to worry about her getting pyometra(life threatening uterine infection) when she gets older.

| My little one is going to be six months on Dec 16. Is she ready to spay? I'm so scared to have it done. She is my only dog and she never gets out of my sight. I am on the fence as well but I do not want puppies at all. Is the surgery hard on them? She is only two pounds and a quarter. Do they wait until the dog is a certain weight? How long is the recovery? I take her to the vet tomorrow but I trust you all more....please help.... |

| Went to the vet today. She still has ALL of her baby teeth!!! he said he would not spay her for another three or four months now. This made me feel better but now I have another concern. My mom has a Cobbie Chihuahua. He is fourteen years old and has never been neutered. She never bred him so he has never had a "date". He is a house dog and very spoiled. I am so concerned about bringing my little one around him. When do little yorkies come into season? Should I keep her away from my mom's dog just in case? Mom says her dog won't try to get with her because she is too small. I say " a man is a man" and I don't want to hurt her feelings but I don't want her dog to touch mine....just in case!!! Anybody have any ideas about this? |

Thank you, I took her to the vet today...I will ask about the other things like an overnight stay. But it looks like I have some time now.

| She can be spayed in another month. Usually yorkies don't come into Season until they are about 12 - 14 months of age. But, there are some that come in about 8 months....so, I wouldn't wait as the vet suggests for another 3 months.....You'd also be waiting for her puppy teeth to be pulled and waiting can throw off her bite....

Agreed. I am already wondering about the shots. I was told she would only need a few shots. She had two at one vet, he hurt her so bad I wouldn't go back. Took her to this one who is several miles away and they are talking about giving her another shot...she had a rabie shot yesterday so that was four total. I thought that was the end of the shots. They throw big words at me and I asked the girl (vet's helper?) yesterday what it was for....she didn't know. The vet is not in there for very long and I didn't like that either. It's a bigger place than the one I went to first. Fancy equipment for looking in the ears and such. Jazz is a drama queen...she cries at the drop of a hat, but I can tell when she is in pain too and the first vet hurt her. I'll keep looking....thank you for your help!!! Jazzi says thanks too!
