| Champagne dreams with beer wages? Hi, I'm new on yorkietalk and am still trying to find my first yorkie. :3 I don't know if I'm being unreasonable in what I want or not but it's taking me a long time to find the right breeder/puppy. :/ I'm looking for a male yorkie around 12 weeks of age, up to date on shots, well socialized, AKC registered, health gurantee, the parents need to be healthy and have had all the needed health screenings before being breed, but I don't want to spend more than 600. To put it bluntly I just want a puppy from a trustworth, reputable breeder who knows what they are doing. Am I being to unreasonable in what I want? How much was your healthy yorkie puppy? |

| I doubt if you will find a trustworthy, reputable breeder to sell you a puppy for $600. A low cost puppy could set up up for a world of hurt. Have you thought of rescue? You may be able to get a younger Yorkie adult for $600. Best of luck in your search.

You are looking for all the right things in a yorkie and breeder, except your price expectations are way off base. I'm not saying its impossible to find a reputable breeder to sell you a puppy for that price but its pretty darn rare. If you are set on a puppy and can afford ALL of its care then don't concern yourself with the price. First look for a great breeder you can trust and you feel comfortable with. If your set on spending less then $600 then you should start looking into rescues, shelters, and/or a slightly older yorkie.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yorkies cost more to breed than other dogs. Labs, can have 12 puppies each litter, where Yorkies usually have at the most 4, and average is probably less than that. So right away the cost per dog goes up. Also, Yorkies are more likely to need a Cesarean than many other breeds, again, this is a big expense. Because Yorkies are so popular many byb breeders have started breeding, but I can assure you they don't do health testing and don't even know what the health risks are to the breed. The good news is that good breeders don’t charge as much as a Yorkie is worth!

When anyone complains about the cost of a yorkie, my first thought is, if you can't afford the dog, how can you afford to care for it...especially if a medical emergency arises. But anyway... I have champagne taste too and hate settling for less than I want, so I save for what I want. Hallelujah, get yourself a jar and don't go out to dinner one night this weekend, stay in & eat a sandwich (or bowl of cereal or whatev...) and put $20 in your jar. Don't rent a dvd this weekend either and put another $5 in the jar. Skip a coffee on your way to work this week...add another few dollars to the jar. Do this with everything your willing to go without for a few months...and soon, you'll have enough for your yorkie.

| I was so lucky to have gotten Avery from his previous owner for only $275. She was having her 7th child, and poor Avery just got trampled on all day. If I were to purchase him as a puppy, I'd have to guess he costs around $1,000 plus. It's hard to find a Yorkie who will be beautiful, the appropriate weight, & fully vetted for $600. While it's a dream come true to find one that cheap, I'd be weary that some vaccines weren't given, or they are just looking to make a buck.

| cheap Yorkie? I agree with everyone else here. We were VERY fortunate to have purchased a very healthy pup from a not-so-reliable breeder/broker for only $800. As I found out later, after having joined YT, this particular couple were simply "middlemen" for other breeders, and usually did not have the mom and dad on-site to verify the quality of the pups. We spent much more than the purchase price, over the next year, to ensure our Graysee was spayed and had all the appropriate vaccinations, medication, and proper care required for a healthy, happy doggie. We STILL spend hundreds per year keeping her groomed, maintained, with healthy teeth and safe toys and food. Raising a pet is the same as raising a child, and you get back much more for your investment; not only don't you get the backtalk and disrespect as they age, but instead receive a huge amount of unconditional love! |
