| Hootie & Hobbs are BOTH vomiting! So, most of you know that both Hootie & Hobbs had tapeworms a couple of days ago. When I took them to the vet for the tapeworms, the vet gave them each a pill for dogs 12-26lbs bc she was out of the pill for dogs under 12lbs. She said the little extra medication wouldn't hurt them. I gave them the pill to treat the tapeworms on Monday. Monday night and all day Tuesday they were fine. Yesterday was a different story. Yesterday morning Hootie vomited. It was yellow bile so I figured she was just hungry. I gave her some food and she seemed fine. But, she vomited 3 more times yesterday while I was at work and again at 2 am this morning and again at 4am. Hootie did eat dinner last night, is playing normally, and is drinking water. Besides the vomiting, she's acting like herself. Hobbs is also not feeling well. I think he's only vomited twice, and it was last night after he chowed down on some food. But, even after he vomited, he still ate some more dinner and held it down, which was a relief. But, he's still acting like he doesn't feel good...he shakes on and off and is not especially playful. Neither of them ate this morning, which isn't totally unusual. They both drank water. I left them in their crate with a bowl of food AND water when I came to work this morning. When I leave for my lunchbreak, I'm going to get go get some NutriCal (I'm out) and some Pedialyte and see if that will make them feel better. Hopefully I won't go home a vomit in the crate. Should I be especially alarmed? Do you think the medicine is causing this even though it's been TWO days since I gave it to them? Was that too much medicine to give them even though the vet said it would be ok? Do you think this is normal since they were just treated for tapeworms? Do you think this is serious enough for me to leave work and take them to the vet NOW? I'm SO broke right now after having just spent hundreds at the vet for the tapeworm deal. The LAST thing I want to have to do is take them back to the vet. But, obviously, if I really need to, I will. Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry this is so long. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Bit scary there. You know what call the vet. I don't think that she should have given them a dosage meant for a bigger dog. But I am wondering if maybe they just have a tummy bug. I doubt that it was the meds since they didn't have this reaction when you first gave it to them. Maybe give them some pedialyte when you get home and just watch them. These stinkers can get into stuff so easily that you just never know if it's a tummy bug or maybe they ate something that they found somewhere. Good luck. Call the vet and she should answer some questions and maybe take a look at them free of charge since you just spent a million bucks there.

| Call the vet and ask...since they gave him the dosage for larger dogs, I would consider it follow up to your initial visit....I would ask them not to charge you! Also, like a doctor, a vet will call if you ask.

| Sorry to hear your yorkies are so sick..... I don't know if the worm med's is why their ill but, sometimes I wonder what vet.'s are thinking...worm medication is a poison to kill worms, it would seem to me you would only give the absolute smallest dose that was absolutely necessary to do the job, not a more is better attitude....ALL medications & shots carry risks they are NOT harmless...I hope their better soon...

| I would check on them at lunch and see if they feel better and see if they have eaten or vomited again. If they have vomited again call the vet. I don't really think that there would be anything they could do if the medicine was too strong, except wait for it to get out of their system. Is the medicine that you are talking about that new heart worm medicine? If it is I hope that they are not sick for almost a month until it leaves their system. Poor babies, they have been through so much lately. I hope they feel better and when you get home at lunch they are back to normal... |

| I'd vall the vet and see what he thinks. If they keep vomiting, they can get dehydrated fast. I'm sure they will be ok but I know this must be making you worry so much. If you need anything, let me know. Give little miss Hottie and Hobbs kisses from me and my crew.

| Well I guess that medicine is supposed to keep working for a month, maybe a contiuous relase medicine, and it has taken 3 days for it to build up. I am not sure, call the vet and ask them if they are sick from the medicine how long will it take for it to leave their system. Since it is a pill and not the kind that you put on their skin I don't see how it can last that long in the body.... |

| I found this when I was searching the Internet: "In the studies done on IverhartMax, there was an increased incident of vomiting compared to IverhartPlus, which does not treat tapeworms." So, this medication must have a side effect of vomitting. Hopefully it will soon pass. *sigh* |

| I hate when vets give the bigger dose on stuff like this - they tried to do that to me on atopica and i bought it but never used it just went to dermatologist and they said no way that dose is way to much for small dog one was 10mg for dogs under 10lbs and the other for dogs 9.1-16lbs 25mg and my dog is 6lbs and drug causes vomitting - I could not do it - the vet should have done a prescription so you could get it from another vets office to get the right dose - I would take it back but they probably will not reimburse as they say once you take it home you cannot bring back which is frustrating. Once i told them my dog could only take pills and they said try the liquid as they made up liquid formula and sure enough went home she would not take it and i could not take it back - so now I do not leave the vets office until i have pill forms - also i have been sold expired shampoos so i check the bottles on that and I called the manufacturerere virbac once and they said you can return any of their product and the vet can send back for reimbursement as they stand behind their product You can also call the manufacture on this drug and ask them if the dose is too high will it cause vomitting. I usually read petmeds.com for every drug to see side effects etc so check that as well. It is best to start with lower doses and move up not just give highest dose to sell what is on your shelf that was not right at all. Sorry you are going through this and many times they make us feel like we cannot question them and I feel intimidated that i have to take what they give me but i have learned that I will question everything now as i have learned a lot from reading and sites like this as well. |

| i know pepcid (famotidine) and pepto bismal help with vomitting - that is good she is exchanging as there is a reason for weights on the packaging from the drug company but they say it is within therapeutic range to go over some time - I switched vets because of this with the atopica drug as when i called the company they said they would never tell them to give a higher dosage than what was on their packaging; however my dd started on 10mg with atopica and after a month derm said we needed to go to 20 mg as not working and we need to increase to see if it will work for 60 days but she is monitored by blood work the whole time |
