YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | Brandi is having a bad reaction to shots! Brandi & Phantom had a vet appointment tonight. They each had rabies and distemper shots, and just Brandi got a Bordetella (kennel cough vaccine) - not the shot, it was given through the nose (it is required for the classes she will be taking). Anyway, we went home, and Brandi vomited and became very lethargic. Her gums got pale, so we called the vet and they said to bring her right back. So, we went back and he gave her a shot of an anti-inflammatory, and sent us back home. He said she should be better in about an hour or so. Well, we've only been home for a few minutes and she just threw up again! At first I thought it was the kennel cough vaccine since she's the only one who had that and Phantom seems to be fine. Now, I'm not so sure, because I just remembered last year when they got their shots (they were just puppies) he gave them the anti-inflammatory as a preventative measure. So, really, the reaction could be from any of them. I'm sure this has happened to other people. How long does this reaction last? What can I do?

| Did the vet give Benadryl and tell you to continue giving it? Are her gums pink now? Any reason why so many shots were given at once? I would insist next time that those be separately and premedicate Brandi with Benadryl. Now you won't know which one is causing the problem, so it can't be avoided next time...

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | No, he didn't mention Benadryl - how much should be given? She's about 7 lbs. I don't know why they give them all at once, I thought that was how it's done.

When they do react, quite often an anti-inflammatory and Benadryl are given. When Ellie reacted that's what they did and then had us continue the Benadryl. Ellie's dose is 1/2 teaspoon (at 6 1/2 pounds). I would hope that after going back to the vet that the vomiting would stop. If her gums are still pale, there is probably still something going on.

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | Her gums are more pinkish now - but still not perfect. She is moving around a bit more. I'm going to see if we have the Benadryl.

You can also give the tabs but I'm not sure of the dose.

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | I don't have the Children's. I'm going to keep watching her. Hopefully we won't need the ER vet tonight!

| I just took my Laci to the vet last week and the vet wanted to do both distemper and rabies I said NO, she said it was rediculas to pay for another vet visit to do the rabies shot seperately , Id rather pay the extra money and have it done at different times.. I am a wreck over the rabis shot and it it was not mandatory I wouldnt do it at all!! |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | She seems to be very itchy. She's rubbing her nose on everything. Now I'm leaning towards the nasal Bordetella vaccine as the cause. Ugh, I guess we'll never really know. She's also scratching her ears, and they are clean, so maybe she's just itchy all over from the other shots and/or the anti-imflammatory. I see now why the Benadryl is given. I wish the vet would have mentioned that. I would have picked some up on the way home.

It doesn't sound like she is coming out of it quite right. I'd still consider the Benadryl for her. When Ellie reascted she threw up, collapsed and started going into shock. The meds brought her out of it and she was just a bit lethargic but okay after awhile.

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Last year, my Captain got both shots the same day and had a bad reaction, first started laying around, then started itching and we noticed his face seemed "puffy" and then the vomiting started.....we took him to the emergency vet who treated him with several meds to stop the reaction. This year, we did the combo one day and four weeks later did the rabies. The vet told us after each shot if we saw any type of reaction to immediately give Benadryl and if no change in 30 minutes to bring him back to the office. Luckly for us....he did well with just the separation of shots and time allowed in between. You mention itching.....check the face closely - do you see any puffy/swelling or really red eyes or drainage - anything that would be a visiable reaction?

No vet should ever tell you that anything you want to do for the safety of your dogs is ridiculous. Dr. Schultz, professor of immunology at Wisconsin State says that rabies should always be given separately because it causes the most reactions. Anyway, the only shot that the vet has to give is rabies. They could do that one on the day of the exam and have a tech give DHPP two weeks later without a vet appt. and you'd just pay for the vaccine itself.

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | She's doing a little better. Her gums are just about back to normal now. She still seems uncomfortable because she keeps going from bed to bed - maybe because of the itchy feeling, but I don't see any swelling, redness, or puffiness near her face. Would that happen right away?

Severe reactions usually happen within 1/2 hour but it could take several hours.

| I had a similar scary situation with Daisy about 3 weeks ago. She got two shots, and didnt take to well to them. We left the office and she was fine, but about half an hour later we could not touch either side of her bum/legs where the shots were administered. She couldnt sit or lie down. She was very uncomfortable. About an hour later the real scare came, she seems loopy and high...wouldnt move and had a glazed look. She scared me into giving her solid gold treats that she loves but cause soft stool (so I avoid). It was only till she slept for 45 minutes did she start to come around. The vet told us to "give her some time"...of course i was furious...I've heard the stories! How much time do you give a 4lb-er! Her last shots are next week...I purposely took off the whole day to watch her closely. I'm going to ask about benadryl...the thing with doctors is, if you dont ask...some wont tell...
