| Can dogs being treated for Giardia still transmit this ? I'm wondering . For example, If I come in contact /play touch etc... a dog that is being reated for GIardia. Can I possibly transmit it to my pets at home? Genie Cookie Lola Angel |

| My baby too I took Bella(yes, another Bella..Lol ) to the vet 24 hrs after she was flown in, as required..I never would've guessed she was sick..She's eating, and playing..But the stool sample showed she has giardia..I feel a lil better knowing it has been treated successfully in other puppies.I've only had her 3 days but it was love at first sight..I could not imagine giving her back to the breeder..So thanx to everyone for making me feel a whole lot better! |

I agree with Dee and Paula (Diggy)...please do not give puppy back. Izzy came with coccidia as well and we found out at the first vet visit with a stool sample. It cost us that and some meds and recheck but she still had so another round and that's it. I did not blame the breeder as I believe stress did this for Izzy. I also notified the breeder and she was forever greatful because not all people notify them. She was on top of it for the rest of her littler and cleaned house like I did. It should not cost you hundreds of dollars to treat this. I wouldn't blame the breeder and she probably didn't even know your baby had this. You are getting excellent advice...see..we've all had this issue and kept our babies and they are all so wonderful. Paula you are so right...your paths cross for a reason!!

| I agree, my Scooter had it and for @ $20.00 plus an office visit, he was fine within a week. Vet said he probably got it from eating bird droppings, as my others weren't sick (they don't put everything in thier mouths like Scootie did at that age). The birds are constantly leaving droppings on my pation in the back yard. I guess to him at 14 weeks, looked like a "liver treat". Funny how they realize what makes them sick because he doesn't eat bird dropping anymore. Come to think of it, I stopped eating mud pies years ago!

| Puppy with giardia As I was doing research on my new puppy, I found your question. I would really like to know what to do also. I've had my little girl for about 4 weeks. I purchased her at 10 weeks old, apprx 8 ounces. We found out after two weeks that she had giardia (high count) and coccidia because my 16 month-old, 3.2 lb yorkie got very sick. She got it from the baby. Well, that's not all. A couple of days ago we found out she has ringworm also. She has it all over her little body and glowed in the vet's office under the blue light. She has had both prior to getting her, but came with a clean bill of health. Now my 12 year old pek is sick. The poor baby yorkie has to be quarantined for at least two months and could possible be a carrier to both. She has grown to 1.7 lbs at 3.5 months and we love her to death. Should we give her back because she could possibly infect people and pets again? Somebody please give us some helpful advice. |

| Safeguard dewormer "Fenbendazole is the active ingredient" given 5-6 days gets rid of the nasty giardia. You have to do it every 2 weeks also. Our vet used to use metronidazole but it didn't always completely treat the giardia and its not good on the dogs organs. he told me to use the Safeguard for horses which is exactly the same stuff as Safeguard for dogs only packaged different and quite a bit cheaper. As far as the coccidia there is a new drug out our vet just switched to which is called Marquis.Prescription only. It took 2 treatments, cost 9 dollars and we are coccidia free. Good Luck to you and your baby. |

Giardia can be picked up anywhere at any time. It can be dropped in your yard by other animals, and by bird poop. They can get it from drinking from a stream or puddle. Pennie had it when we got her, she got very sick because it took awhile to find it. If you get a neg, wait a week and have her poo tested again. Make sure it is sent out to a lab and not just looked at through a scope by the vet, they cannot tell from doing that. Then you give them fenbendazole (panacur) for 5 days. The reason your puppy is having hypoglycemia problems is most likely because of the giardia. The pup is not getting proper nutrition because of the nasty parasites. | |

I have it on hand because it is a de-wormer as well and I use it on my dogs every couple of months. I have gotten giardia before.. GROSS... green poo. TMI yeah? hehe And got rid of it in a couple of days. It is SO easy to get. If you have children, just use good hand washing and keep children from petting the puppy for 5 days, and bathe the puppy during treatment and after!! | When I got Muffin at 3mos I found out that she had Giardia too. The vet treated it with Albon. I would not return the puppy. If you want you could ask the breeder to help with the vet bill as I'm sure you were given a health certificate. I would let her know so she can test the rest of the puppies. My vet said it was common for small breed puppies. Muffin is perfectly healthy now at 9 mos. Keep your baby...you'll be glad you did.

| According to my vet Giardia is becoming more frequent, probably from better testing. He said they really don't know exactly how puppies get it, because many people with a litter of puppies who have never even been outside get it. Ours had never drank any dirty water, as a puppy had been raised in the house and never taken outside until we got it. It didn't have loose stools until 2 weeks after we got it. We had our water tested and it showed signs of giardia, according to the tests probably not in high enough amounts to make a human sick, but possibly enough to make a small dog sick. We started buying bottled water and only drinking it ourselves and only giving it to our puppy. Two months later the pup had loose stools again, once again it tested positive for giardia. This time we had the bottled water tested and it also tested positive for small amounts of giardia. So imo you can't blame a breeder and I know who got my pup from gave me all kinds of information about the importance of worms, vaccinations, but also coccidia as well as giardia. She had the puppies tested for worms, coccidia and giardia and gave me the vet report. She also as a preventative and on vet's advice treated all puppies for five days with panacur. My contract clearly stated that it didn't cover worms, giardia, coccidia as they were easily treatable and could test negative before they leave and positive later on. It also stated it only covered parvo if the puppy was found to be sick within 48hours, because new owner could take puppy and expose it to parvo before it had all it's puppy shots. Sounded perfectly fair to me. Puppies can pick up worms easily and apparently can pick up giardia easily as well. Parvo sounded fair to me as well, because I was given tons of info on that as well, how puppies aren't safe until they've had their entire series of shots. How not to take them to pet stores, parks, etc. until they've had all their shots. But then I've had dogs all my life and know dogs get sick and worming, vaccinations, etc. is just part of owning a dog. It could be the water supply that deserves the blame for the giardia as our water along with bottled water tested positive. So it's common and becoming more frequent and is easily treatable. Cost me $34 bucks, $14 for the fecal exam which tested for giardia as well as coccidia and worms and $6 for the panacur. Then a week after the treatment, I paid another $14 for another fecal exam to make sure it was gone. I didn't go back and ask the breeder to pay for it, to me it was no different than worming the pup, which you must do again anyway. Another thing the vet told me was the liquid panacur seems to work better on giardia than the pill form or granule form. He gave me cattle/horse panacur. 1cc per 4lbs or 1/2 cc if weighing under 4lbs for 5 days. |

| symptoms I would love to hear about symptoms your pups experienced while going through this. I got my little guy at 8 weeks this past Thursday and its been stressful ever since! He was treated for fleas and termites with in 2 days of being with me. He also got his first round of shots at that time. He never really ate anything I offered which I chalked up to being at a new home but then Monday he started throwing up anything he did eat. No diarrhea or blood in his stool. I took him back to the Vet yesterday to make sure he wasn't hypoglycemic. Everything was good. The vet has suspicions he may be younger than 8 months and was weaned too early so he gave me formula to try He would drink it but would throw it up immediately. The first 3 nights he was very vocal at night whining and crying. I woke up this morning after not hearing him all night worried sick. I dropped off a stool sample this morning, I should hear back tomorrow. The vet examined some of his stool today and said he could see some bacteria so he gave me some antibiotic but he just threw up the first dose I gave him. Does any of this sound like what anyone has experienced with Giardia?! |
