Sad Gemma was hospitalized, but

what do you guys think of this? So if you've followed my other threads, the baby Gemma, 2 lbs) was diagnosed with giardia but not on meds yet, and was throwing up all night-from about 2am and almost every hour after that. I would get up with her, clean her up and give her some nutrical. She hadn't eaten since late afternoon yesterday. By 5:30am I was frantic and made an appt to bring her in at 10am, the first available. They admitted her and said she looked very sick. I cried my eyes out to leave her. They did xrays and blood work and all looked ok except her glucouse had dropped to 32!! Normal is 200-350 they said!! I talked to the breeder to let her know what was going on and she basically made me feel like I did the wrong thing by leaving her!!! That "yorkies do that all the time, they don't eat. So you should withhold food for 24 hours and then give her a little and she'll come around!" I could not beleive my ears! She said they will probably pump her up with too many fluids at the hospital and she might get "something" from another sick dog, etc. I felt like crap and called the dr. They said I could pick her up as late as 10pm tonight, but they would recommend she stay. I said I was going to visit for sure but didn't want to get her all worked up and the dr said she won't even care if I'm there cause she's THAT lethargic! She said with her glucous level down to 32, she could have died if I had waited! Well I went to see her and she jumped up with that cone on her head and ran to see me!!! I held her for a while and talked to her and finally had to say goodbye again and she cried!
She has a big Alaskan Malamute right below her who is bleeding internally and very sick, so crying loudly! Plus Gemma was shaking when I came to her cage but in my arms she was fine! She can't be happy there!
So......first I am insulted that the breeder pretty much ridiculed me for taking her to the hospital but second, now I DO feel guilty leaving her and seeing how happy she was to see me!
Do you think I should pick her up tonight? They said they could cap off the catheter and I could just bring her back in the morning....she looks so much better now.
I'm so sad!

Is there anyne there all night with her? Have they been able to get her glucose up to normal. They generally respond pretty quickly to rehydrating and sugar level going back to normal. I always had Cali at the 24 hour Er hospital when she had her low sugar episodes and they assurred me that they take great care and staff will hold the little scared ones. If they feel there is no chance of her getting really bad overnight she may do better with you. It's a hard decision. As far as the Breeder had you listened to her your baby would be dead so don't feel bad you did exactly what you should have.

Thank you! Thats what my husband told me too! I am still so emotional!
Yes, they had her glucous up to 320 (or so) and that was before 4pm while I visited. There are technitions there overnight, no dr though. Mind you, the tech on duty is the same one who told me at 5:30 this morning "she should be fine without food or water until the dr can see her at 2:30 pm!!" But she is hooked up and they can monitor everything while she is there.....She was just so perked up and happy to see me!!

you must be out of your mind with worry - That breeder is NUTS telling you to fast her !! NO Yorkie should ever be without food that long - especially a puppy...You did the right thing bringing her in so fast and I'm just sorry she's this sick....I can't believe the breeder said that to you and just wonder how many others she's said that too also.

Poor little Gemma....She's in good hands right where she is and they'll get her healthy again.

Ps - I'm sorry I missed this earlier - When I posted in the other thread I thought you were looking for general information and I would never have been so unconcerned in my reply when I mentioned Shooters Site ...
but that really IS a good site to read and I suggest when you have time you take a look. It has lots of Puppy info

but for now - you just hang in there and I hope she's able to come home in the morning ...and hugs to Gemma

I'm sorry, but your breeder is crazy to tell you that. But, unless she is on IV's and being continually monitored all night long - I'd pick her up and take care of her myself. Her glucose level should be up if they're hydrating her and giving her Nutrical. I do not believe in withholding food with a little tiny one for any length of time because their sugar can drop so fast without food.

I hope Gemma will be just fine. If it were me, I would pick her up. Good luck and keep us posted.

hmmmm ...ok there IS a technition there then ?? It sounds like she's doing much better but not having ever dealt with this I don't want to say anything - Patti's had way more experience....

GOOD Luck to Baby Gemma and I really hope this is the only bout with this sneaky illness EVER

Phoebi went through something similar (needing IV fluids continuously) ... I would leave her at the hospital all day and pick her up at night. Nobody was there anyway and I felt way safer having her at home with me.

I hope your baby is feeling better soon....

I'm so sorry you are going thru this! Please update us on little Gemma. I am sure she is missing her mommy terribly. But don't worry the doctors know what they are doing, she was prob. shaking because the place was unfamiliar to her. The breeder was not giving good advice, small pups have to eat or they can die.

I think that if your girl was that sick than the vet knows best at this point
and if they feel she needs to stay on iv to get her sugar levels back and to re highdrate i would do just that as a breeder i may not always know what is best

Well yes, if I keep her there, she will be on IV and continually monitored by a technition. But she is so not happy there I kinda feel she would feel better sleeping at home with us where she is used to everything...but I don't have a way to monitor her sugar levels! I'm so torn....

Tough call, but I'd probably pick her up tonight and bring her back in the morning, if it's safe for Gemma. If the vet REALLY advises against that then you should definitely leave her with them...and go there 1st thing in the morning. Is a normal glucose on a puppy really 200-300 and is that different then a full grown dog? Just asking cuz my 3 year old, Winston was taken in with "low blood sugar" the 1st time about a year ago, he was 2 then and weighed 7 pounds...never have quite figured out why his sugar would drop and he'd go into seizures, bad seizures...But getting his sugar up has always brought him out of it. The vet keeps him for a few hours, with IV fluids for glucose and observation...as soon as he was able to keep food down, and his sugar up they'd let him come home...Obviously it would be much more serious in a tiny puppy that may not eat, or vomits when she does.
Know that I'll be thinking of you and Gemma, don't feel bad if you must leave her there, you want a healthy puppy...and she needs medical attention. Wish you and she well!!!

I swear, sometimes I don't know what I'd do without you guys. Sounds so corny but I'm so serious! Just to get your input or reasurance and prayers, helps so much!
Her dr didn't think she should come home tonight and said she probably wouldn't respond to me if I visited...but she did!! She jumped on her feet, with her little cone head, and was so excited to even hear my voice!! The tech couldn't believe it! So....had her dr seen this, maybe she would change her mind and think it was ok for her to come home? But the vet was gone. She gave me her # - do you think I should call and ask her what she thinks now or just not bother the poor lady??

Has she been eating okay? I'm so sorry to hear that little Gemma is in the hospital Poor little girl, and don't ever doubt yourself! You did the right thing, and thanks to you, she's still alive. You're doing everything you can. When Miko was a pup and really tiny, the vet had us put a little honey in the water to keep his sugar levels up. It helped...Keep us updated on little Gemma. Did they do a fecal test? It could also be coccidia?? I'm sorry if you've already posted this information, I might have missed a thread.

Well she hadn't eaten since yesterday afternoon, except I did get her to eat baby hotdogs before we went to bed. But then she vomited non stop from 2am until about 7:30. While at the hospital she hasn't eaten. They were gonna offer her baby food around 5 pm so I am hoping she was interested....
Thank you for the reassurance...I may try the honey water idea
