| What to do? I took Piper in to get spayed. The vet did blood work, her enzymes were high. Not to high to where she still did the surgery. Scheduled me back in a month for more blood work. The vet sent me to a specialist for an ultra sound. The 1st specialist couldn't see a liver shunt, so he sent me to another specialist for another ultra sound. 2nd specialist couldn't see one either. 2nd specialist said since Piper isn't showing any signs of liver shunt, to recheck her blood work in 6 months. 1st specialist calls me to find out what the 2 DR had to say. I told him & he totally disagrees, he thinks I should go with further testing. Has anyone run into this before? Where it turned out not to be a shunt. If I go for further testing it's 6 hours away. Should I wait and see, or go for further testing? The second specialist said since she is healthy except for high enzymes, but he has seen higher. He would wait. He also said most dogs with shunts are smaller & have other signs of shunts. I'm so torn on what to do. The 1st specialist seemed to want to do all the testing possible to rule out a shunt. Along with possible biopsy. That's surgery with a dog that seems perfectly healthy. I would just hate to not do anything and have her start going down hill. Or do everything & find out nothing is wrong except her enzymes run high, to which some dogs do. Any advice I would greatly appreciate it. |

| Oh gosh, what a situation Any chance of getting a third opinion? Then you can go with what two out of three specialists say? If it was my dog, and I had the money for the further testing, I'd probably go ahead with everything except the surgery/biopsy. I'd only do the surgery if the other tests indicated it. I'm sorry that you are going through this, you must be scared for her

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had highe enzymes but not real high i think 0 -15 is normal and her 2 test were 97 and 35 but she had had some hypoglycemia episodes and throwing up so they did the ultrasound which did not show a liver shunt externally but the surgeon said that usually with high enzymes but not real high under 100 she said can indicate internal liver shunt that is only diagnoses by a biopsy. So I had the biopsy done and she did have a mild internal shunt but the surgeon said it was so mild that she didn't think it caused her symptoms and needed no treatment except I try an keep her on a lower protein diet. She grew out of all of her health issues and weighs 5 lbs now. I know it can be so upsetting. Good luck!

| Pipers enzymes were 200 & 300. So that sounds quite high compared to Cali. The specialist said he has seen them over a thousand. Money really isn't an issue when it comes to my baby. I'll pull it out some where. I just didn't know about the next test also. Something to do with radio active stuff they put up her rectum & it lights up inside to show a shunt if their is one. How harmful is that? Side effects etc.. I just hate to put her through excessive testing when she doesn't seem sick, but I'd hate to wait until she has symptoms also. Patti, Question... What kind of low protein diet did Cali go on. What food did you feed her? Right now I am feeding Piper her kibbles all natural, Pro Pac. Carrots in the morning & chicken baked. The specialist said that was fine. Not to give her any treats, or change her diet. I just hope what ever I decide to do, is the right choice. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I decided against the radioactive type test because I would have had to take her to a university animal hospital hours away and she would have to stay a couple of days and since she needed to be spayed soon I decided on the liver biopsy during her spay. That's what showed her having MVD or internal liver shunt. I feed her baked chicken that is thin sliced and has 17% protein and Cesars canned as shw won't eat anything else and the canned has 8% protein. The only treats she gets are all low protein, usually 2% protein. A lot of the dog treats are very high in protein so watch those. I had the Bile Acid test rerun a week later because the vet said many things can throw them off and they were lower. Maybe you can just wait a month and have the Bile Acid test rerun and then take it form their. I will keep her in my prayers.
