| Need your advice - mange? fungal? staph? So our little guy had what vet suggested was a non infectious mange whe he was around 6-7 weeks old. There were small red wounds on his belly and he was licking/itching that area a lot. Following an immunity-booster shot he got and cleaning the area twice daily with an antiseptic the wounds healed and black crusts/spots formed. The itching and licking stopped all together, but the black crusts/spots stayed. Some of them fell off, some of them grew larger as Mike's body grew up in size as well. What we now have is a very blotchy black belly. Doesn't bother him, doesn't itch, is not red/infected and doesn't seem to change in size as his body growth slowed down a bit. Vet confused me, because 3 weeks ago we had our last puppy shot and she said she wanted to give a treatment for this belly spots but didn't want to give it at the same time with the shot. Yesterday we went back for a check up and a de-worming medicine and she said "oh well it seems like this is just a pigmentation and maybe its genetic and maybe it will get better as he grows up or maybe the spots will stay on his skin". I told her if it's just a question of how it looks, I don't really care, but it doesn't seems like a pigmentation, because when I daily continue to clean his belly with an antiseptic I can see black-ish brown coloration on the cloth I'm cleaning with. I'm afraid it can be a fungal or staph infection. If you read until now BIG THANKS. I'm looking into a dermatologist vet that can do a microscope test, but those are quite hard to find where we live. So meanwhile I want to start doing something... I looked into different dog shampoos that address skin issues and see that most of them include - chlorhexidine and ketoconazole. My question is - can those be directly applied in small % to his skin, maybe one day one and the next another? I have a chlorhexidine 2% spray and a ketoconazole 1% cream at home (both are for humans though). I think the current antiseptic doesn't do anything. Also I read that coconut oil is beneficial in case its a secondary fungal infection - does anyone have any experience? I will attached a photo of his belly to the next post.. thanks guys. hoping for some advice. Last edited by Mike_and_Me; 10-31-2018 at 04:20 AM. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wow, that picture is pretty interesting, and not what I was expecting. Many yorkies with allergies will have a black-spotted belly, but nothing even close to this. I would see a Vet Derm for sure if you can find one, they are amazing! Otherwise, I'd ask your current vet to biopsy a piece of that skin and have it sent to a lab for a cytologist to look at. And/or, she can take a skin scraping and simply smear it into a culture container and let it grow out for 10-14 days to see if anything fungal grows in culture. Also, does your vet use an ointment called Muciprocin there....? That may be good. So sorry you're going through this, it must be so frustrating!

| Just an update. We waited for 10 days to get an appt with a professor vet from a local university. Bloodwork is perfect, of course it doesnt look deep into specific, but shows no infection and no irregularities. She believes his skin spots might be an atopic reation in the area whee our furbaby had mange, so we are going to switch to a ultrahypoallegenic prescription food and will see in a few months if it progresses/subsidies. If you came across a skin reaction like this please let me know. |

| Hello! I have a similar situation, though my maggie is still in an irritated state. We have been to the vet twice, first time we were given an antibacterial shampoo. I used it every other day on the area per my vet. That didnt really help, and the bothersome area only grew. The problem is on the side of her neck, she is very itchy and has lost a lot of her fur. She has scabs from scratching so much (and it did get infected despite the shampoo) - when I noticed the infection we were given Benadryl, a steroid, and an antibiotic (all in pill form). We just finished those up after about 12 days. The area is still bothering her (itchy, blisters, raw skin), and I have noticed bumps (like very large raised bug bites) with black scabs on them. This sounded like what you had previously. She has some black patches appearing on her skin too - these were not there before. Maggie is 8 years old, well groomed, really an indoor dog aside from our walks (we live in a city), and never had skin issues while we have owned her (she was adopted at 4). I think i will look into a vet derma too...i just feel so bad for her, it looks very painful I will try to attach a pic...

TBH I'm not thrilled that his hypoallergenic food contains virtually nothing other than hydrolized fish and rice, and he always seems hungry, but I'm glad the skin patches are fading away and the vet said once they disappear we will try switching to a normal puppy food, with a different main source of protein (his previous one was lamb). Also, bless you for adopting your girl! Last edited by Mike_and_Me; 11-28-2018 at 01:07 AM.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Amazing!! So glad you're seeing some change. Maybe once you decide to do a kibble, you could do a fish based kibble.

| Thank you so much We are feeding Farmina, but they don't seem to have fish kibble for puppies, only for adults. I guess will wait for spots to disappear first and then will look for food options with the new vet. |

| Ohh.. my Scottie had a similar skin issue. When we first got him as a puppy, he had these small little blisters. We were told they were puppy rashes and would go away as he grew up. Then the redness came back some time later. And it would develop into black scabs too. Our vet prescribed antibiotics, which she claimed would 'cure' it. She made him go on it for a long time in order to cure it. She said the reason some dogs have recurrences is because they weren't on the antibiotics long enough. So sure enough, we did as instructed. The scabs still came back. -_-... I read that it's possible that he needed more minerals and vitamins, so I had him on some powder mix for some time. It didn't really make much of a difference. I found that if I was strict with him and not let him lick his belly, the redness and scabs wouldn't develop as much. His licking kind of irritated his skin. Some time ago, he got sick with diarrhea. When the vet saw him, I asked about his belly again... This time, he was given this medicated shampooo called "Douxo Chlorhexidine PS Shampoo". I think this was what finally relieved his skin condition. I used it to clean him once a week, and then once every two weeks. It seemed to work wonders. Mind you, his wasn't as bad as the photos you've shared. But anyway, that was Scottie's experience with this belly rash/scab issue. I still tell him to stop if I ever catch him licking himself though... |

Seems like our boys have had a similar issue, but the difference is for us after the black spots appeared there was never scratching, licking, seems like no discomfort whatsoever, it must have been something in his food that had aggravated this.. I actually got a medical shampoo delivered yesterday, let's see if it will work to get the rest of the spots out of his skin

| Also thank you for sharing the shampoo, I will be writing down the name for sure, just in case. I checked the ingredients online and it has an anti-fungal, antiseptic and antiseborrheic, all in one. Seems perfect for any skin conditions! |

| I wanted to share an update on Mike's belly ) Sometimes you search old threads on the forum without an update and don't know whether a certain treatment or food etc worked or not. Hoping that it could maybe help someone in the future. I'm glad that together with our new vet we decided to do a prescription food + herbal supplement with turmeric before any kind of drugs and it worked very well! Back to normal puppy kibble now, still wiping that area every night, but it looks like the skin is on it's way to be totally clear soon. I'm so so so happy. p.s. made a t-shirt out of a baby onesie last night. I thought that the text on it was right on point |
