| Behavior change in 7-year-old yorkiepoo It started off with his poop getting stuck in loose tail hairs. So I would wash it out for him and he'd be himself again. I lost my usual groomer a few months ago so the hair has gotten much longer so it happened a lot and i would wash it out each time. But then it got to where I could smell a poop smell even when he didn't seem to have one stuck to him. He would start hiding and act like he was embarrassed. Gradually as it happened more, he will not bounce back to his usual happy self, but keep to himself. Then he would have periods of where he would sit up and stare straight ahead with a confused look on his face, like he didn't know where he was. Now it's gotten to the point where he won't come to eat and likes to stay in a cage or under a bed. I will eventually bring his food it to him and he will sometimes eat, sometimes not. When I check his butt to see if there is anything there, it doesn't look like it but he won't let me touch him there to check it thoroughly. Now i'm worried that he won't let a groomer work on him, especially the butt. He's always been a happy dog most of the time but now seems to have an emotional problem. I'm wondering if he has a stomach issue and maybe there is slow drainage that makes him uncomfortable. He is not the tiny Yorkie type, but a Yorkie-poodle mixture and weighs around 20 pounds. |

| It sounds like something health related it going on. I would get him to the vet and get him checked out. Something is not right.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This doesn't sound like an 'emotional' problem at all - this sounds like this baby is in pain; possibly having to do with anal gland issues or GI issues. Did you ever switch foods during this time? I would get him to a vet ASAP. Any time you see inappetance in a dog, it's meaningful - and the isolating is usually a pain signal.

| its possible that he was having some stomach issues and the the trauma of having his butt washed may have just made him a bit squeamish. Some dogs don't like getting wet or being washed and dogs are smart and will shy away to avoid going through that again. If I say "bath" out loud my dogs go under the table! You can should totally go to a store like TJMAXX or MARSHALLS and look in the men's accessories department and invest in a little mini shaver/clippers for beards, etc. Its perfect for shaving under the tail and ears in between groomings to avoid being in the position to have to wash his nether regions as much. Take him to the vet as well just to rule out parasites, digestive issues and other things then you can really know how to move forward because the symptoms don't sound normal. |

| Thank you all! I took him in to the vet this morning. Anal glands are fine. Seems to be a bite on the back and tail that has become infected involving part of the tail and down the legs. She gave him a strong antibiotic shot and also cortisone shot. Sent home with a Gentamicin/ Betamethosone spray to his inflamed area twice a day, and Tresaderm Liquid for his ears as they were were quite red. Should get relief from all in 48 hours. He's now sleeping soundly. He was due for his yearly checkup and shots so got that done also. I think as one of the posts above said, his fear was dreading the frequent washing of his butt that was causing him to be afraid and hide. I feel so much better now too! |

So relieved to hear it's something minor and fixable. So for the infected tail/leg area - did she call this 'pyoderma'...(layman's term is sometimes "hot spots")...?

| I don't think she used pyoderma but it may be on his medical chart. I didn't get a copy this time. He did throw up last night and it had a yellow tint to it and looked like mucus and there were little pieces of solid brown-colored 1 or 2 inch tube-like pieces in it. He's always had a sensitive stomach so the medication is probably making him a little nauseated. |

| Sore rear So sorry your boy is feeling bad, but good that you got him to a vet and a treatable dx. The vomiting could be bile due to empty stomach and or the meds, but the solid pieces are strange. Did he have a fecal test for parasites? Also Cerenia is good for nausea and can be given as an injection or orally. Hope he feels better soon poor baby. Don’t know what the icon in the heading is! Has he ever had reflux btw, which is quite common..? Occasional or frequent reflux of yellowish bile..? Hard swallowing? Swallowing then coughing...?
