| Myiasis, confirmed today by vet. Chewie isn't acting sick. Her appetite is fantastic, she's eating and playing normally. She had a rectal exam today, hit up with heartworm medicine- injection- given an oral antibiotic to treat parasites, AND tomorrow the capstar I insisted is coming, and we'll be hitting her up with that, too. I thought she had parasites, but the vet confirmed they were maggots, and was trying to tell me at first that her bm was sitting out- which I said, no, it wasn't- she pooped on her pad in FRONT of me, and I picked it right up. I put all of her cloth toys in the front loader, threw out her old pillow that we were replacing, and am currently washing all over her bedding as well. I threw out every single treat she had, her lamb ears that were out- from last night- her new batch of sojos and replaced it, and confirmed with her second BM today that they were dead. I'm in shock, and the vet was trying to tell me for almost 45 minutes how I was mistaken, then came in and apologized saying it could happen, that she ate something contaminated. NO signs of rectal infection. Intestinal infection would show symptoms, but they gave her a blood test to confirm. No infections on the skin. IF the rectal temp hadn't had another one come out, I wouldn't have been believed at all. Carpet steamer is coming tomorrow instead of next week. I'm guessing not one of you guys have seen this, so I'm just venting. I am in SHOCK. it happened in the last two days. Even her hamburger we bought was tossed. Treats, too. Replaced everything. . |

| Yikes. I'm sorry hope everything works out. I had never heard of that and had to look it up. Capstar is for fleas so how is that going to help? I know this is off topic but what heart worm shot are you giving? There was one out there that is very very dangerous and had been pulled from the market and some how got back on it and I just want to make sure your not using it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm sooo confused! So, you're saying the myiasis is GI *only*....not cutaneous at all...? I'm totally blown away. Wow.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Found this...sounds like she could've eaten something with fly eggs or young larvae on it, and then they survived her intestinal tract! https://www.researchgate.net/publica...iasis_in_a_dog

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | This too is interesting, even though about humans. It seems it's frustrating and difficult to treat at times, and reinfection can occur. Ann- thank you for the links, that's something I didn't turn up today when looking. It gives me more information. Thank you guys for letting me vent. I'm in shock, still, and, of course, frightened of the medications she was given. Husband is correct, she HAD to have this. Injection of anything already gives me pause, but, the oral one also made me very nervous. she's playing and eating just fine. My good friend from childhood is a vet tech, and she told me last year when she got hit up with the rabies and her vaccinations at the same time talked me out of a straight out panic attack telling me that these happen within hours, and what to look for. I also saw that the proheart shot was given the second or third time and that was when the really bad reactions happened. There won't be a second time. Article I had to show the vet myself before she took it seriously- no joke. Yesterday morning my dog pooped live maggots. I immediately took the fresh stool sample to the vet who confirmed the

| Thank you, Taylor. I'm hungry, but can't eat thinking of this morning.. they were... well fed. I'll say that. I didn't count them, but, let's just say it was obvious. My son had pinworms and gave them to hubby, too back in '05. I thought that was bad myself. One of these days, I'm curious if you ever find something in your classes with more information. I appreciate the information and the warning about the proheart. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I wonder if she somehow consumed part of a dead bird or some other decomposing food outside or something...? After reading your post yesterday, I've been checking my dogs' poos like crazy !

I've found only one in each BM, quite dead, and I gave her a bath (even though she had just had one the night before) and checked her beard, her leg hair, around her bum- nothing. Only thing are those two little pimple/bumps under her chin that the vet has been watching for months. Not one sign of an infection. Dan is furious that the vet hit her up with a shot like that without telling us the risks, but, at the same time, we understand that she HAD to do it. It's quite clear that the possibility of toxemia is a bit higher than the vet was comfortable with, and this is known to kill them.

| Happy to hear you found dead ones, at least the meds are working. What a freak thing to happen. I take Cody to state park walking trails, he has to sniff every thing, after hearing about Chewie, he will sniff NOTHING. I'll be mashing up poops now.

My husband insisted that our vet- not the one that saw her yesterday- be called. So I did, to ask about signs of the infestations lessening so capstar could be given as a last resort. Well, the doctor read the report, and then she dismissed everything and said, just tell Jenn that it sin't internal, they crawled on it and laid eggs later, so just keep the "area" around her pad cleaned. First of all, my floor is very clean, so that wasn't something that happened. I said, excuse me, but the report says INTERNAL and it IS in her GI tract. the doc filling in was given a FRESH sample and it wasn't even a little bit dried, it was literally scooped up and put in the ziplock bag immediately. To make matters even worse, one popped out from the rectal temp-it's why they gave the rectal exam! I'm just frustrated because our doc is a great Doc, but a cursory examination of the report isn't going to tell her anything, and it's clear that's what she did. However, our take home literature and dx was clear about the internal. I know it's just because she wasn't there ,but dang, I just wanted to have my question answered and move on! but, because I knew that this was something that most vets haven't' seen in dogs, I took a picture last night, since the ones yesterday were in there, but most were a few centimeters in there, only a few were inside. I'm glad I followed my instinct, it was dead, but it was very clear that it was embedded. so, I guess my long rant is, if I am not seeing any in the last three times she went, it's a good sign, right?
