| Liver Shunt, advanced symptoms I have a tiny gal who we rescued three years ago. She was on death's doorstep at the time, age 1 yr and diagnosed with a liver shunt. She was too small for surgery. She has done well on a liver shunt diet, lactulose and metronizadole up until about six months ago when she started having seizures. She responded well to treatment but six weeks ago she had another bad spell and although she responded well to treatment it was only three weeks before it happened again. Yesterday and today she has had difficulty in having a bowel movement. I am really at a loss as to what to do now as the vet says we are likely reaching the end of the road with her. I've searched the web trying to find information on final stages of liver shunt but found nothing. To complicate matters we are moving clear across Canada in two weeks. If my baby is in fact in final stages I don't want to risk her going into seizures in the middle of nowhere but if there is something I can do to keep her going I'm willing to try. I just need help in determining if she is in fact at the end. Does anyone have any experience in the final stages of liver shunt? Many thanks. |

| Have you ever tried Denamarin? I have a rescued Shih Tzu (we adopted at age 3), diagnosed at 7, and is going to be 15 in February. We first tried Rx meds but I learned about Denamarin which really helps the liver function. She has never had a seizure after being on this for a couple weeks. My vet is a believer in the Denamarin now as well. I also have my little girl on Natural Balance Vegetarian dog food which she loves. Obviously, you need to discuss any changes for your baby with your vet before trying anything new, but I thought I would at least share my experience with you. I wish you & your baby only the best.

| I am new to this site. My husband bought me a Morkie fir Christmas. She of course is precious. We were to Virginia this weekend and she got really sick. I ended up taking her to a veterinary hospital in Virginia. Her blood sugar level was extremely low and they said that had I not taken her in she would have died that night. After getting her levels up they tested her for liver functions. Her liver function was good but her ammonia level was very high. After returning home to Pa and seeing my vet here she said she didn't think she would survive. Does anyone have any suggestions or treatments they have tried on puppies with liver shunt problems? |

| What do you mean by too small for surgery? How small is she?? The hospital I go to does this surgery on tiny pups all of the time. So sad....but I doubt there is much left for you to do. After these pups have been medically managed for some time, they usually are past the point of surgery working as they develop other shunts. Nonetheless, if she were mine, I would be doing a full workup to see if surgery could still be an option. What has your vet suggested??

| I was going to ask the same question.. What is her size? We have also done liver shunt surgeries on some very small Yorkies...and agree with Lady Jane Wishing you the best...
