| Antibiotics With Out A Prescription. Antibiotics With Out A Prescription. For or against? Sources? Alternatives? Vet only? Looking for opinions. Tear it up! No bad answer in my opinion. |

HOWEVER, my Vet does keep me supplied with Metronidazole as I have one that issues with IBD and I know when to give. BUT then I also was a Vet Tech.

| I'm opposed to antibiotics without a prescription from a vet. Not all antibiotics are the same and only a vet is qualified to determine which one is appropriate and dosage/details for administering. I also believe it is important to have a vet examine the animal when antibiotics are needed. Our pets are weighed, the vet listens to heart and lungs, and so on.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh gosh...NO WAY should antibiotics be generally available to the the public - over-use of antibiotics is how suberbugs and resistant bugs are created. So having them widely available would be one of the biggest health disasters in human history, imo. Unless you're involved in medicine in some way, most people don't even know how antibiotics really work....so how would they know which antiobiotic to even use...? Is the bug they're trying to treat Gram+ or Gram- ? How resistant is it? What is it resistant to? Should you use a 1st-line antibiotic or one of the more aggressive ones...? And on and on and on.... So nope, no way.

| I remember doing that many years ago. A course in microbiology stopped that behavior in its tracks!

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Nope no way in the city for sure.. But if you are hiking canoeing paddling into the interior where help might be 3 days away - then yes. It will become part of your emergency pack for humans n canines. I remember canoeing into the interior of Algonquin Park many many years ago with a young cat and a young cocker spaniel. I was prescribed a broad spectrum antibiotic for emergency use. And you read correct a blinkety cat. It was crazy and I never repeated taking a cat with me camping. I was restraining the dog from jumping in the water and trying to reassure the cat about being on water. We camped and both dog n cat kept me warm at night. You understand we were in a pup tent. But then the cat got loose and climbed a tree. OMG it took me near a day to get him down that tree. We turned around and paddled home again.
