| Trouble with Stool - Variation of Soft, soft-serve, and soft, pencil-thin Hi All, We have a 13 month old Yorkie who has been healthy and doing great until recently. A few weeks ago, he has been having problems having normal bowel movements. I'll do my best to explain his diet and everything thoroughly, but we can't figure out what to do differently. We visited the vet, stool sample provided. Stool sample came back normal. She advised maybe stress as my wife was away on business, but we still haven't been able to get things under control. Every once in a while, he has a good movement. Diet: - Royal Canin - Yorkie Blend. About 1 cup total per day. - Recently while having BM problems, mostly chicken and rice. Treats: - Stella and Chewy - Chicken (we put these in his Kong) but I've stopped giving them to try and see if that is the problem. - Boiled Chicken (cubed) - We put this in is Kong sometimes too Since the problems have started, I've limited Stella and Chewy as I'm not sure if maybe something in his stomach has changed to not agree with this. Some days, he has BM's on his schedule, but they are still soft and of no form. Other days, he wakes us up to take him out and they are soft, pencil thin stools. I want him to feel normal and I'm not sure what to do/change. Thoughts: - Add pumpkin to diet and see if this helps? - Change dog foods? - Make balanced home-cooked meals? Does anyone else have this type of problem? |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. A couple possibilities for the unusual stools: being overfed, or the chicken addition, or maybe an anal gland problem. How much does your boy weigh? Chicken and rice are usually good for putting my younger boy's system back on track after diarrhea, but too much of a good thing also causes both of my boys' problems. Eating too much in general can cause diarrhea. Anal glands: does your boy express his glands naturally or are they done manually by a groomer or vet? Does he strain to eliminate? Pumpkin: can be helpful for many dogs, but gives my boys diarrhea. I have used it only when they were constipated.

| Maximo, He is 5 pounds and has been steady at that weight. He's very active and in great shape. Even with the bout of diarrhea, he's still active, happy, eating, and drinking. I don't think we overfeed him. He eats probably about a cup a day, total, plus some treats. I don't know about expressing naturally, but I'm pretty sure the groomer does. We actually just took him to the groomer this weekend. Before taking him, he started scooting maybe a week prior. Then scooted the day after and hasn't since. I'm wondering if maybe that was the problem. I don't know, I'm really at a loss and just want to get it under control. |

| After just researching, I guess maybe that is too much food? Looks like 1/4 cup, twice daily, is appropriate? We used to free feed and recently moved to scheduled feeding so not sure if that plays into this at all. |

| Scooting is definitely a sign of something going on with the anal glands, which could be the origin of his stool problems, or could be caused by his soft stools. Usually takes firm stools to empty the glands. A full cup of RC a day sounds like a lot for a 5 pound dog. On the RC website, if I am reading this correctly, they recommend 3/4 cup a day for a high activity dog weighing 6.6 pounds: Yorkshire Terrier / BREED HEALTH NUTRITION? / Dog Products / Products / Products / Home Royal Canin USA - Royal Canin Being 13 months old, your pup is at the age when you want to start cutting food back a little. Puppies can generally free feed, but at 1 year is when you want to establish the adult portion. I don't want you to think I was suggesting your dog is overweight. I was just thinking about my experience with my boys, how they have had some stool problems from overeating, usually when we get too generous with fresh chicken supplements to their kibble, or too many kibble rewards adding up to an extra meal. It's so easy to do. I hope you can figure out your little guy's problem and get him back on track.

| Maximo, Thank you for your reply! I think you might be right. I think we are feeding him too much accidentally. Luckily this is recent--unfortunately, we keep the kibble in a sealable container and scrapped the bag. We'll have to cut it back. As for the scooting, he has since stopped so I think that problem has subsided--maybe it was the catalyst but it should be getting better. My guess is the combination of chicken and too much kibble. Once again, thanks for your help! If anyone else has any suggestions, that would be appreciated too. |

| Tessa is 5.4 lbs. and I feed her 1/4 a cup twice a day so I think I agree with the amount you are feeding being too much. 1/4 a cup morning and evening was recommended to me by the breeder, vet and that seems to be the appropriate amount via the guidelines on the kibble bag. Hope this helps and good luck! |

| I just wanted to let you all know that it appears we've got the stool problem under control. Fed him 1/4 cup twice yesterday and this morning we had a perfect stool. Thank you! |

| Our Kinder is five years now but when she was a year she had diarrea and vomitting. Our vet was treating her and finally he took her for a couple days. He called us and told us Kinder was allergic to chicken so we put her on Fromms Whitefish and Potatoe and never had a problem again. Thought this may help you hope all goes well for your baby.
