Tessa is 5.4 lbs. and I feed her 1/4 a cup twice a day so I think I agree with the amount you are feeding being too much. 1/4 a cup morning and evening was recommended to me by the breeder, vet and that seems to be the appropriate amount via the guidelines on the kibble bag.
