| Waiting for blood results.. I haven't posted here in a long time but I really need some advice. Sophie has been having some belly issues for the last week or so and we are lost on what to do next. Last weekend she was not acting like herself but was still eating and drinking/running around but by Tuesday she stopped wanting to eat all together so we rushed her into the vet. The vet got her to eat some Science Diet a/d and told us to bring her back if she started vomiting or her bowel movements changed. She was doing fine until yesterday when she had a soft bowel movement and it was covered in a thick yellow mucus, so back to the vet we went. They did a fecal test and it came back clear of any parasites and her exam and temperature were normal. This vet told us it could have been from switching her back to her kibble, that her belly just hadn't adjusted. I asked for blood work because I want to rule out anything more than just a belly ache. She has blood done at the end of April and that was all normal but a few weeks ago we had her stomach emptied because she decided to eat a chocolate donut. He said that the residual effects from that would be gone by now and he wasn't worried and he would send in her blood and we would hear back today what the results are. It's a long weekend and they told us that their lab is closed and isn't sending out reports until after the weekend but our vet is now closed until Wednesday morning. Sophie has only been eating her kibble since the last bowel movement and just had another one that has streaks of yellow in it, but not mucus. Should we be taking her into the 24 hours vet tonight and have them run her blood in house so we can have the results tonight so if there is anything major going on we can start treatment now instead of waiting until Wednesday? Or is this being over paranoid? I am definitely worried about her but I don't want to over react, so I am hoping for some opinions from the outside. |

If this was your human child what would you do? I can't for certain say what is wrong, if anything....but I can say I know if this were my child or my pup I would not want to wait and the waiting would drive me crazy. You are concerned enough, why wait? Keep us posted. Good Luck.

| I completely agree and am glad that I am not being crazy. Waiting will definitely drive me nuts. I am always scared that people will think I am being ridiculous. We have had a lot of issues with Sophie lately (knee problems) so I have spent a lot of time there. The vet didn't seem in a rush to get bloodwork done because her exam was fine, but I know with these little ones the small chance that something is wrong is worth the time and money because things can get bad very fast. If I had known the results may not be back until Wednesday we would have taken her straight to the 24 hour vet last night. My husband is currently on the phone with our vet right now so hopefully they have some answers for us. I tried to edit but when I reread it I realized I made a mistake and that our vet is open until 5pm tonight and then closed until Wednesday and the lab is still running the tests but the administration isn't sending them out this weekend or something...so they were going to try and see if the report would be sent of if Sophie's was even done since it wasn't considered an emergency. I will update more when we find out! |

| Well, her vet never called back. They were supposed to call the lab and then have a vet call us an we never heard from them (major disappointment with them, they could have at least called and let us know if they didn't get the results when they called). We called at 24 hour vet we usually use for emergencies and explained what was going on and with this place if you call ahead and book an appointment they charge a regular office visit so no high emergency fees, they booked us in for 10:30pm as we said it wasn't an emergency and we just wanted repeat bloodwork. We let them know that she was negative for parasites and she was heartworm negative at the end of April, so they said they will run a panel for us - hopefully we get the results tonight. She is acting way better now and her bowel movement was a lot better, but we want to be on the safe side and double check. We are thinking it is because of her food, but we don't want to upset her tummy more if something else is going on...so peace of mind is well worth the money and having it done again. Besides, if something does show up, we will have this blood work and our other vet's blood work to compare things to. I am trying to stay positive that nothing major is happening and she just has tummy upset from food. |

| Home from the vet. All her blood work came back normal! She ripped open a wrapper in the car though and ate a small that fell off of a burger, so now I have to watch her...but it is the first time she has eaten onion and it wasn't a huge piece...so I think she will be okay. Thanks for your support with the bloodwork fiasco though! |

| Glad all the bloodwork was normal. Even if you couldn't find the cause of her ailment, the fact that you ruled out anything life-threatening is a relief. Emergency vet medicine is much like human Emergency Dept medicine-rule out the dangerous stuff & follow up with regular doctor if the problem persists. At least you can now get some sleep without fretting on whether you should have gone to the vet or not!

| Ok so I couldn't handle to worry about the onion and back to the vet we went. They gave her some medicine to throw up and they found a little slice of onion. She is so dopey right now, but I think she is going to be okay from the onion...the vet said she emptied her stomach contents and all they found was the slice...we got there within the hour, so I think she is going to be okay. Better safe than sorry! |

| Oh my, you have had one heck of a day. I want to commend you on being safe, rather than taking a chance on being sorry.... twice in one day. Hope the rest of the weekend is uneventful for you and you can all relax and be well.

| I'm glad you went back to the vet re the onion too, she already didn't feel good and the onion could have had an impact on her. Onions are toxic and the sensitivity varies from pup to pup. I know Mini almost died from eating a few grapes....ugggghhhh that was an expensive and horrifying nightmare...better to be safe than sorry! Glad it all worked out, I hope she gets better very soon, great job!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Has she been checked more than once for giardia? Giardia is notorious for hiding under microscope and it often can take 2-3 tests for a positive result to be found. Good job on taking such great care of your little one!

| Thank you everyone. She is definitely worth the chaos and money spent at the vet. She is doing better today - a little hesitant to eat, but she ended up eating a little rice and the new kibble we were trying to slowly switch her over to. She hasn't had any bowel movements yet, so I am hoping when she does it is normal. She is also pretty quiet today, but I don't blame her, throwing up when you're sick is bad enough but being given medicine to force it and then being dopey from it is probably very stressful. I woke up with a sore throat today, so we have spent the day cuddling in bed Quote:
I don't know why I am nervous still about those blood results, the most recent ones came back normal so I know she's doing okay, sick dogs is just really scary! | |

I'm glad your little one is ok. I probably would see if symptoms of diarrhea do not clear up before I ran a giardia screen. Did they give her metronidazole for the diarrhea? It sometimes is enough to clear giardia (although in some areas like mine the giardia is resistant to metro and panacur is given).
