YorkieTalk Newbie! | Help with a Very Sick Yorkie My one year old Yorkie Lily was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) late last year. She has been sick on-and-off for the past five months. Her current condition includes diarrhea, not eating, etc. and has been taking multiple medications for a while now. Has anyone else experienced something similar with their Yorkie? I am starting to believe that her condition may not improve as proficiently as her vets had hoped.. We have tried many different medications and prescription foods and we are still experiencing the same symptoms since day 1. She is currently only eating EN (which can only be accessed with a prescription) and is taking sucralfate to coat stomach lining, omeprazole to block acids, and metronidazole. Looking for people who may have tips/answers on how to treat a very young dog with this very sick condition... |

| We are going through the same thing with one of our pups. She started with little bouts every 4 months and then back in November got pretty bad. Your vet can probably give the best advice. However, what I have found is that it is trial and error to figure out what works best for each dog. They had Allie on Science Diet W/D and while it cleared up her diarrhea, it was WAY too much fiber for her and her poor tummy was still bloated. She is now on Science Diet i/d low fat and really has done leaps and bounds better with no poop problems so far. Also, for her, a course of tagamet really helped calm things down. Now we do Pepcid as needed. I think the main thing is to work with your vet to find the right combination that works for your pup. If what they are doing now isn't clearing it up, they should be willing to try out some other options. Good luck! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and WELCOME to YT. So sorry your kiddo is sick w/ IBD, that has to be just miserable to watch her go through . There are other folks here whose yorkies have it, so hopefully they'll chime in. Have you tried Tylosin yet? That works for some IBD dogs. Have you ever tried a homecooked fish diet for her? Have you put her on probiotics to repopulate her small intestine's flora? When she was a puppy, did she happen to have Giardia or any other infection that affected the GI system? This would be very important to know.

| Have not gone through any of this with any of my dogs, but I was speaking with my vet and she now does laser treatments for IBS....there is also "fecal transplants" that are done....in addition to all the medications and diets that are available to treat this major problem. Good luck with your baby and this problem, I do know several people that have had experience with this and it can be managed. |

| I would also suggest home cooking for you dog. Most dog foods are highly processed and not easily digested. Home cooking is much closer to giving your dog foods it would eat in nature rather than the processed stuff that can sit on a shelf for months at a time. |

| If she is eating Purina EN and doing well on it, I would not change it. That is a prescription food and there is nothing in it that would make her ill unless she has an intolerance to it. I have two pups with IBD and they are on Hill's Ultra Z/D and doing very well. RX foods are great if a pup can tolerate them. If it gets to be a problem feeding her RX foods, you could do a consult with a vet nutritionist. You can find one at: American College of Veterinary Nutrition Someone mentioned a specialist...if you have not been to one, I definitely recommend going. You can find one at: American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine > Home but you will need a referral from your general vet. There are quite a few members with pups with IBD and I am sure some will have tips for you. Welcome to YT!

| Hi Welcome to YT! Just an FYI: Some dogs do not tolerate Metronidazole very well... Hoping and praying a solution is found. I agree with the others about seeing a specialist and possibly try home cooking. A nutritionist can provide a recipe geared specifically for her medical condition and the food can be made in batches ahead of time and frozen for storage.

| Hi KJC don't mean to hijack this thread but Elliott is on Metronidazole for his MVD and we have a very hard time giving it to him, he won't eat food if we put in in there and gags when we just give it to him orally. He has been sick with pancreatitis as of late. How do you know if they are having trouble with this particular medication? |

| I went through something similar with my older dog. Symptoms would usually go as follows...he would wake up and not eat his breakfast, shortly after he'd have diarrhea. He'd refuse to eat all day because he had an upset stomach but he would usually eat something later at night. On days he felt good, his appetite would be great....and then the symptoms would start all over. For a while, it seemed like it was a weekly thing going on. One thing that really brings it on for Prince is stress...especially traveling I remember I'd bring him home to my moms and he'd have diarrhea for 3-5 days afterwards. But there are also times when I have no idea what brought it on. I also think the combination of panceatitis and gall bladder issues really flared it up as well. At one point, I was switching foods like crazy because I couldn't get him to eat anything for more than a few days. I am sure this did not help...but at the time, I thought getting him to eat was more important that what he was eating. I think what finally helped us was a combination of things...medicine, low stress and a strict routine and diet. I gave him his meds and fed him at the same time daily and i found a food combination he'd eat consistently and I gave it to him the same time and same way daily. I stopped giving him any table food off my plate and I stopped almost all of his treats. I also pretty much stopped taking him places, other than short walks around the neighborhood or to the vet. We battled with it hard for about a year and finally the episodes of diarrhea started getting fewer and farther between and the time span of them started getting shorter. He still gets an upset tummy once in a while...but instead of it lasting a few days and then getting better and then getting worse again, he usually has a bout of diarrhea for the day and he's done. It's been about 1.5-2 years since this whole thing started and I can't say it won't get really bad again. I just know for now, we are managing it and he has mostly good days with only a few bad...about a year ago, he had mostly bad with only a few good, so it's a major improvement. He's not on any medication now either. Looking back, i feel like once everything was flared up bad, it was really hard to get things calmed back down again. It was just this vicious cycle he was on. YorkieTalk Newbie! | Just wanted to thank everyone for their immediate replies and helpful tips. My yorkie Lily seems to be acting quite normal today, but her issues are normally reoccuring. I am supposed to talk to the vet tomorrow about creating a dietary change or perhaps other options which will keep Lily healthy and remaining her normal, bouncy self. Many of your tips I will bring to the vet's attention and will discuss them with her tomorrow. Once again, thank you so much for the help!!! We will keep you updated. |
