| Eye Discharge or an Over reaction? Hey all! ! Right, i have this problem with my girl and have been wondering why it has been happening. She gets black gunk just under the middle corners of her eyes and it sticks to her fur. I have tried pulling it out gently ( with some plastic blue gloves & tissue ofc. ) but she will yelp and i dont want to cause any harm. I am so scared in case it bungs up and up and in, like two years time she loses sight! It is hard and sticks to the fur like glue. Is it frm her eyes watering? I have never experienced this with any other dogs i have had before. Can you get medication for this or eye drops or am i over reacting? Thanks - Heidi & Rosie

| Tibbe has been having this at times since he's gotten allergic to his hepatic diet he's on for his MVD. Just wash it off with warm water twice daily, morning and night, allowing the moisture to soften the crusty part and then you can just wipe it off without hurting them. It keeps them from getting hard crust build up if you keep the eyes clean from it and if it's very thick, I would seek out a vet for help to find out what's causing it.

| Use a wet cotton ball to moisten the area first. I use a flea comb (closely spaced teeth) to comb the area and keep it clean. There are many things that cause eye goobers: stray hairs, environmental allergies, food allergies and more. I wouldn't use eye drops unless prescribed by your vet. My Max is allergic even to the sterile saline that says it doesn't have any preservatives. Usually the sterile saline isn't really sterile once the bottle is opened anyway. It gets worse with continued use and if the tip of the bottle touches anything. When I need to flush something out of my boys' eyes, I use lukewarm tap water. I figure that is what goes in their eyes when they have a bath, so it can't be too bad.
