| Turbo had a bad reaction to sentinel! He got his 1st dose of sentinel (along w/everybody else) & he's the only one having mucus-y poopies. Vet mentioned that they can have a reaction to the beef 'flavoring'. He's allergic to beef, makes him throw up or have upset tummy. He might've had a reaction to the medication itself too, not the flavoring since there's no actual beef in there. Vet said most heartworm meds are beef flavored, so they're going to prescribe a medication that I need to give him 2 days b4 giving sentinel & 3-5 days after. Doesn't this seem like too much? I don't like this idea @ all. They've never been on heartworm meds. I've just been testing them every 6 months & hoping they don't get bit by mosquitos...I know, cwazzie but HW is not that bad here & we don't go out from dusk til dawn. (got my info from truth4dogs years ago from YT) I don't know if I made the right decision now starting the HW meds & Turbo is so sick from it...IDK if I'll continue it, even more so w/the combination of prescribed meds (sawwie can't remember the name, clay or something? haven't picked it up yet). I understand that dogs must be on HW meds if it's common in your area, it really is not here in southern CA in LA & we don't have a yard (condo), so they only go out when I take them out. I also recently switched to K9 Advantix II, it's supposed to repel mosquitoes (but I might not use it on them anymore bc it makes them itch & gave Mimi blackheads). Here's a map of the cases of HW in 2010 (the most recent I could find) & where we're @, it's white, <1 case. http://www.heartwormsociety.org/down...e-Map-2010.pdf Please advise, what would you do if you were in my shoes? I am thinking of leaving Turbo out & have him tested every 6 months. I don't think he does well w/any kind of pesticide or vaccinations. He has to have an anti-inflammatory shot b4 any vaccines & watched closely for 30mins afterwards. Once his 1st annual boosters were done, I made the choice not to vaccinate him further. His vet never pressed me or questioned me to vaccinate him again. I would love it if he doesn't need rabies, but unfortunately it's required by law. Please know, in no way am I encouraging people in southern CA or other places that are low cases to NOT use HW meds (or not to give vaccines)...it should be discussed w/your vet & chosen according to lifestyle (travel, time spent outdoors, etc.) & risk factors.

| I'm so sorry to hear this! What are you going to do now? Will you try it again or change? Tibbe got sick the day after his last Heartgard dose and I'm so worried it was a partial reaction due to his probable MVD but I don't know. I'm petrified to stay with it and scared to change.

| Poor Turbo. Hope he feels better soon. Quote:
Definitely discuss with your vet lifestyle/travel/risk factors. With that said, I do recall a lot of Southern CA members, including highly respected breeder exhibitors, that they don't use HW preventatives.

| You asked 'What would I do?' I wouldn't give him anything that makes him sick. Has he had a BAT? Tink has mild MVD and the liver is what activates vaccines and makes them work. As her liver doesn't work right, she only get Rabies vac by law. I still have to treat her like an unvaccinated dog. But if she were to bite someone, she has her tag so that saves a ton of red tape and possibly losing her. I use Revolution on her bc it works through the skin before it gets to the liver. I also adjust the dose (per my vet) to her exact weight. If a dog has an allergic reaction to something, the reaction can get worse each time. So IMHO, I would stop that med and switch to something else. I'll PM you.

| Even in areas where there is a low incidence of HW, I personally would be more comfortable using a preventative. I hope you can find one that works for Turbo.

| this is just awful to hear I am so sorry and I hate to think that I am going to be trying a new heart worm medicine on my girls it just scares me to death. This is a very difficult subject bc I wonder if they are inside most of the time do they need heart worm meds. I never gave it to my golden and she never got heart worm. She had one dose and it almost killed her so I never gave it her again. Now I am saying that we should not give heart worm meds bc I do give Pixie and Daisy interceptor every month but with them not making it anymore I have to go to something different and it really makes me nervous.. I am glad that your lil one is ok though and it is very scary when this happens.

The dog we had in Chicago over 25 years ago never had preventatives. Vets did not recommend them. However, we had giant trucks spraying chemicals all over to kill mosquitoes. I hated giving up Interceptor. We are using Heartgard now.

| Honestly? You're a responsible owner, you clearly always do what is best for your dogs, I would not give it. And I am very much an advocate of preventing heartworms, but with that said, in your area, it just doesn't seem like a problem, and it seems like it's MORE of an issue to even GIVE him the meds. And to be honest, here in MD where it's more common, I know a lot of folks who don't give HW meds for years and their dogs are fine. I'm not advocating it by any means, I'd rather prevent than deal with the actual infection (I do monthly), but my dads dogs have never been on heartworm meds and they don't do much except play outside in our yard. And they are 5 & 6 years old and have been fine. I personally would just make sure to get a heartworm test once or twice a year.

| I also use Revolution for my dogs. I can't offer much additional advice but just wanted to say I'm sorry you are going through so much with your dogs.

| remember the days when you had your mixed breed dog, they wore a collar, never had vaccinations as you got them from the neighbors litter, never needed preventitives, basically lived outside, ate alpo, and they only went to the vet when they were sick, which was hardly ever? |

| JMO, anytime a yorkie has trouble with multiple drugs a BAT should be done. Anyway, I would not premed just to give Sentinel. I don't like Revolution so woud probably try Advantage Multi.

| False Alarm! I think Turbo has colitis. I saw a speck of bright red blood on his stool last night. Surely, a reaction to sentinel will not make him have classic colitis poopie? (urgency to go & frequently, mucus-y poopie TMI!) I think the visit to the vet to have the HW antigen test really stressed him out. He would be classified as 'high strung' & both Princess & him were shaking like leaves...giving me a massage. Since I have experience w/colitis (Princess), I know colitis symptoms when I see it. Turbo confused me bc I saw no blood, but finally saw it last night. I checked novartis site & they said stomach upsets can happen, but it's very rare, so they recommend giving sentinel w/a full meal (which I did). If a dog gets upset tummy, the next time they take sentinel, it will be better. So I will try giving him sentinel again next month. Will also be talking to the vet about this later today when I pick up the anti-diarrhea med & drop off his fecal for a test. Turbo actually had his BATS done along w/thyroid, diabetes tests (requested by me, worrying mom)...he was throwing up a lot of yellow bile & some food even when he didn't have an empty stomach. It all came back fine & it ended up being a pumpkin intolerance. I was giving them fruitables treat b4 bedtime & mid-day snack. I stopped giving him fruitables & pumpkin & he stopped throwing up! That was 2-3 years ago, so it's probably a good thing to redo the BATS, but I am not concerned. He always has nice firm poopies...until now. Sorry this is so long! Will keep you all updated on how he does in the next few days. Thank you for your well wishes & prayers for Turbo! BTW, how he got his name, when he was a puppy, he would take off running while going #2 & leave poopie trails loll!

I pray Turbo recovers quickly from the colitis and that he does well with next month's HW preventative dose. Glad to hear it was a false alarm.

| It might've been the combo of sentinel & vet visit the day b4 that stressed him out, said vet. They also had to give him a lot of treats while in the back room bc he wouldn't let them get a blood sample. That might have something to do w/it too. No wonder he let out a belch when the vet tech handed him to me. He had normal BM today yay! I think my homemade cooking of white rice, chicken breast & green peas made him all better, nothing like home cooking loll. The med was RX Clay, picked that up too just in case but didn't need to use it.
