Honestly? You're a responsible owner, you clearly always do what is best for your dogs, I would not give it. And I am very much an advocate of preventing heartworms, but with that said, in your area, it just doesn't seem like a problem, and it seems like it's MORE of an issue to even GIVE him the meds. And to be honest, here in MD where it's more common, I know a lot of folks who don't give HW meds for years and their dogs are fine. I'm not advocating it by any means, I'd rather prevent than deal with the actual infection (I do monthly), but my dads dogs have never been on heartworm meds and they don't do much except play outside in our yard. And they are 5 & 6 years old and have been fine. I personally would just make sure to get a heartworm test once or twice a year.
