YT 500 Club Member | dental, and teeth care I didn't know yorkies had to have their teeth brushed regularly. Sonny was my first baby. He's 7 years old now. When he was 3 the vet said some time soon hell need cleaning. Well he told me cost is $300+ and I couldn't afford it at the time. Well the other night I tried to brush his teeth, which he fought me tooth and nail. I noticed his back teeth were turning brown, and gums looked like they were bleeding from brushing. Seeing this I noticed he's always licking his lips, and has bad breath. Could he have an infection or gum and teeth infection? I just can't afford dental right now. What can I do to help him at home to care for his gums and teeth? Or is it a last cause? Help, and advice olz!!!!

| You could try 'brushing' his teeth, he may accept it better starting off with a Q-tip and some doggy toothpaste or gel... or coconut oil. Sometimes they can get food stuck in and around their teeth that will cause a very bad odor, but bad teeth can smell bad too. It's best if you get him in for a dental, and start brushing after that is done. Bad teeth can be a source of infection especially in older dogs and can make them very sick as the bacteria in the mouth can get into the bloodstream, which can be deadly.

| So he's never had dental cleaning b4? He probably has a bad tooth or teeth, it probably hurts & he doesn't let you brush his teeth...Momo had to have 3 back molars pulled on his last dental cleaning & he lets me actually put the toothbrush in his mouth now. B4, he fought me til he was panting & I was sweating loll. I brush my guys teeth every night b4 bedtime. You should really put aside some money for his dental cleaning when you can, it's very important. His gums bleeding is a sign of gingivitis & like Kat mentioned, periodontal disease can carry bad blood to their heart & other organs & cause major health problems. Dog Gum Disease -- Gingivitis and Periodontitis ?Symptoms and Treatments I wouldn't try to keep brushing his teeth if he's bleeding (bad blood)...besides, all that plaque will not come off w/a toothbrush, he needs antibiotics asap.

| You could try applying for Care Credit to spread the payments out over time.

| If you don't find a way to get those teeth cleaned you can pretty much bank on other health problems in the future. I would save up over the next couple of months, apply for care credit, borrow from a family member, etc but for the health of your dog it should be done as recommended. You can try brushing - I'd use a very soft child's toothbrush and pet toothpaste. If the gums bleed after three days of brushing, then the dental needs to be scheduled.

| It sounds like he really needs a dental not only can a tooth or gum infection spread and make the dog sick bad teeth can also cause other problems like heart disease. I am sure he is in pain and that it hurts trying to keep brushing them is just going to cause him more pain. My vet dentist said if there is a tooth problem and there eyes start watering that it means the infection is getting worse and spreading.

YT 500 Club Member | Thanks guys, I'm going to save up for dental work. I feel so bad for him. I'm to blame, I should have taken care of his teeth from the beginning. Had I known about their history with teeth

| I'm going to say something and some people might get mad, but I have to..... AND I do realize that you know you are too blame, but maybe you don't get how serious it can be... You were told when he was 3 that he'd need a $300 dental. Now he is 7 and you still haven't put any $ away for it? Odds are he'll need teeth pulled etc and it may end up costing you even more. Maybe the other folks can tell whether a dental is a flat fee or if they charge for the amount of work they do. If it is per tooth (pulled) then the longer you wait the more it will cost, the more pain he'll be in, the greater a risk of infection, and you may end up with a toothless dog. That can't be what you want for either of you, so I suggest you look into the care credit that has been mentioned. I don't know if you smoke, but if you do you could quit (or cut way down) and you'd save up the $ fast! Or if you get coffee or something you can cut that out and make it at home. Get a jar and next time you want to waste a few bucks on something not necessary put it in the jar for him. Imagine if your dentist said you needed a good cleaning and then you waited 4 years...what condition do you think they'd be in then??? If you haven't taken yourself please check out dental schools in your area for free clinics. And, by the way, nothing you can do at home will really help him, any more than brushing your own teeth is as good as a dental cleaning. I am always amazed at the scraping they do to what I think are my well-cared for teeth! Good luck. |

This poor baby must also have some pain associated with this as well, if his gums are bleeding. He needs to be seen by a vet and get antibiotics and have a dental done asap.

YT 500 Club Member | Well, I know its my fault. I don't deny that. But you don't know my finances either. For your info I would do anything for my baby. During all this, my husbands been jobless, lost our home recently, and trying to pick up pieces to survive. So if I could have dental work done, don't you think I would have done so already? Don't be in a rush to judge without knowing the facts!

| I'm suffering from a severe sinus infection and a throat on fire right now so I'm very irritable. I've stopped myself from posting several times because I know I am, but I just have to say something here. Even if I wasn't irritable, I'd post this but it might come off harsher this time than on a normal day. I apologize if it does. I do understand going thru hard times and losing your job and being without a home. Trust me - been there, done that. Won't get into the details but I absolutely know the downward spiral it feels like and the depression that can come with it and all of that. However, with that said, you were told 4 years ago that he needed a dental. You mean between 4 years ago and last year when you got a new puppy (who's since been spayed, microchipped, and had 2 baby teeth pulled), you couldn't have taken this particular pup to get a dental? Just a question I needed to ask out loud. For now, this baby is in obvious pain if he won't let you brush his teeth and is bleeding. Almost certainly has an infection. If you can't afford the dental right now, please at least get him in to get some antibiotics and something for pain. If you can't afford and can't use care credit, perhaps you have something you could pawn or sell or some friends or family that could help? Just doing a regular vet visit and getting these meds will be a lot less than $300 so hopefully you can do that now and then save for the dental. While at the vet, ask for a new update on price/if he thinks teeth will need to be pulled (they almost certainly will..and that will raise the price per tooth - or at least it does with my vet). I know you feel bad. I am not trying to make you feel worse. Obviously the vet didn't make it clear how important and vital the dental is back then. Anyway, it's discussed on YT every day almost. I just hope this helps you to realize how much info is here for you and let the info prepare you and arm you with knowledge so future issues don't catch you off guard Praying for your little one.
