You could try 'brushing' his teeth, he may accept it better starting off with a Q-tip and some doggy toothpaste or gel... or coconut oil. Sometimes they can get food stuck in and around their teeth that will cause a very bad odor, but bad teeth can smell bad too.

It's best if you get him in for a dental, and start brushing after that is done. Bad teeth can be a source of infection especially in older dogs and can make them very sick as the bacteria in the mouth can get into the bloodstream, which can be deadly.
