| Update Thanks for your prayers, we just got back from the vets. His vet suspects a gastrointestinal infection, he asked me if Valentino had gotten into any rat poison but I told him no but he gave him a vitamin k injection anyway along with a penicillin inj a baytril inj and a famotidine inj. Is anyone familiar with these? They also gave him amoxicillin and metronidazole to bring home. The vet told me if he gets lethargic and stops eating he will have to come back and stay so they can administer fluids. I hope that doesnt happen. As of now I took him a bath and he does seem sad. Maybe because If all the injections? Hopefully the blood work gives is a definite answer |

| Vet visits and baths are both stressful to any dog but to a sick dog, feeling bad, full of medications, the fear and such associated with a bath might have just been way too much. I'd leave him be and only bathe him again when he's totally well. The meds alone with make a dog lethargic and a bath can take a lot out of a dog. Watch him closely to be sure he's taking in some fluids from time to time and get him back to the vet if he doesn't respond or he just seems not right some how.

| He just turned one on Dec 25th and yes I was feeding him raw Stella and chewy. I stopped about a week ago because his stomach would rumble at least once a week I suspected the food so switched to home cooking since he's super picky and wouldn't eat kibble. Do you think the raw caused the infection? When I first started hearing his tummy noises I called the vet and they checke hi stool for parasites that came back negative. That made me suspect the food so I stopped giving it to him plus he no longer wanted it |

| i hope you get answers from the blood work and he gets better real soon. i will keep you both in my thoughts. i think ive read raw can cause this but im not 100% (infections). i tried raw for a short peroid but mine just didnt like it. they are very picky about food as it seems most yorkies are. wishing valentino a full recovery.

| Did the poopie have any jello-y consistency to it? along w/the red blood @ the end? That's a sign of colitis, inflammation of the lower gastrointestinal tract or colon. It can be caused by a high fat diet...raw food has a higher fat content. Princess has a very bad episode couple of months ago & she had to have similar treatment. Penicillin & B Vitamin shots, subcutaneous fluids & amoxicillin. Just 2 administrations of the anti-biotic stopped her runs & bloody poopie. She was staying w/my aunt & she was giving her table scraps & pieces of seasoned steak, which has a lot of fat. I know they also had a bad ant problem, so lots of pesticides were used inside & outside their home...which also contributed to stressing out Princess' already compromised little system. The vet also said to give her a bland diet of boiled white chicken breast & white rice along w/fiber veggie, like carrots or green beans for a few days to settle her tummy...but you're already home cooking, so you got that covered. I would love for her to be on raw, but she just can't handle high fat foods. She needs to be on a strict high fiber, low fat & grain free diet. Hope he'll feel better soon!

| I almost killed an entire litter of 8 - 10 week old babies, feeding them raw....cant remember what the brand was, but the vet sold it, it was frozen, and it cam in medallions or burger size helpings. The babies LOVED it, but it gave everyone of them a roaring gastritis....vet said they could not handle the bacteria that built up in their intestines, expecially from the chicken....they were too young and did not have the intestinal flora to keep from getting overwhelmed with bacteria......Needless to say, THAT was the end of my experimenting with raw meat dog food! Valentino is older than my babies were, but it just scares me......and I would suspect it may have had something to do with this bout of gastritis he is experiencing......especially since you noticed the tummy rumblings and hyper gastric activity after feeding it! |

FYI, that 11% fat needs to be converted from a dry matter basis. It's actually MUCH higher. It's the same with canned food. To determine the amount of protein on a dry matter basis, divide the reported amount of protein by the total amount of dry matter. Then, multiply the result by 100. Stella & Chewy's is one of the highest premade fat foods out there. There's a few other premades that are less, but I've heard of S&C causing this problem before in Yorkies.
