| ![]() Elsy started vomiting blood this morning so I rushed her to the vet. She had a temp and you could tell that she didn't feel well at all. She has pancreatitis. The vet thinks I can manage her at home so he gave her some sub-q fluids, a shot for nausea, a med to coat her stomach and some flagyl. It's been 7 hours since we got home and so far so good. She is feeling good enough that she's looking all over for some food but can't have anything until tomorrow. My vet put her on royal canin gastroinstestinal low fat can food. He doesn't think it is caused by her diet but from stress. I was in the hospital for 7 days about 3 weeks ago and then had to stay with my dad last weekend and she gets so stressed when I'm not at home. Please say alittle prayer for her. |

| ![]() Stress certainly can cause pancreatitis. I am glad she is home with you now and I hope that she will do well on her new diet.

| ![]() Pancreatitis is scary and painful for the dog. I'm sorry you both are going through this, I know the feeling. I'd feed a very tiny meal in the morning (like a couple of tablespoons) and do that a few times during the day working up to full size meals because sometimes it gets worse before it gets better, or at least that was the case with my dog.

| ![]() Since this is not her first episode the vet thinks I should put her on a low fat food. I want to use the dry food so does anyone have a suggestion as to want kind they seem to prefer? |

| ![]() My dog Barney eats the Royal Canin gastrointestinal low fat DRY and he loves it. He also has had pancreatitis more than once unfortunately and this dry food is the lowest % fat on the market for commercial food.

| ![]() I know when Tibbe had GI problems, his vet put him on Hill's GI I/D and it eventually did the trick but only when I fed him nothing but that. Absolutely nothing else - no treats or bite of another piece of kibble or anything. It took a week to 10 days to stop his muscous-y stools, spitting up foam and bile, reflux, reverse sneezing, nausea. I gave him Pepcid AC for 2 weeks also. I think Hill's I/D has a low-fat version you might want to try. It sure changed Tibbe's life to go only on that prescription food. I even make his treats out of it. He's had NO GI symptoms of any kind for about a month now - maybe a bit longer, and I am so relieved. It could be that while he was at your folks' house he got some odd bits of things fed to him from time to time that exacerbated tummy distress. People often will not always admit that they slipped a bite of something to the dog that is not on his regular diet. And it took me the longest time to realize that giving Tibbe 3 or 4 pieces of different kibble for treats after starting on prescription food could still cause problems and when I finally committed to giving him nothing at all but the prescription food, he got well and thankfully seems 100% fine now.

| ![]() Thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions. Elsy is doing better tonight. I've only given her 4 little spoonfuls of the low fat canned food and her meds today. They normally eat Natural Balance and the natural balance treats once in a while - no other kind of food at all. Abigale my elderly rescue has bouts of pancreatitis and I had her on low fat canned food but she didn't like it so I tried the natural balance duck and sweet potato and she hasn't had a problem at all with it and she loves it. I think I'm going to put all of mine on royal canin gastrointestinal low fat diet so maybe it will help, but if Elsy's problem is due to stress I don't know what I'll do because she is so attached to me. She is rarely left alone (except when I was in the hospital and my husband was either at the hospital or at work during the day) Most of the time if I'm not at home he is at home with her but he says she just sits and watches for me. She just like a baby that wants her mama all the time. |
