You know....I don't know that it is a symptom of AAI...it is just that Sammy always does it, so it jumped out at me. I will have to get a video of him doing it...will try to do that tomorrow.
I have never heard of it as a symptom...so I really think it is NOT that...but I had to say it in case.
Thanks for understanding...I do hope you are less upset. I hate to scare people.

LadyJane, I can't thank you enough for bringing this to my attention. The word "symptom" may not be the correct terminology for what she's displaying and BTW, the first & second time she did it, I thought it was cute! Bowing as is to say "Thank you for hand feeding me". Until I realized it's almost become a pattern. Now how absurd is that! Thank God there's people like you to inform people like me! You personally did not upset me, thinking of little Sammy and all that he endures upset me. My girl is strong and can face anything thrown her way. Now if she could just teach me to be strong...

I took a few videos of Sammy eating this morning. In this one you can see where he backs up to bow, but his back feet slip out and he lies down completely. That's because I put him on the counter without putting something down. Not exactly what he usually does, but you can get the general idea.

I'd just have the vet take a look. No reason to panic.
If you can't get a video, you can just explain it. Sounds like what is called a play bow..but not all dogs are playing when they do it.

Generally these kind of symptoms are caused by either stomach prolems or spinal problems. Lack of appetite can go along with either. Because yorkies have weak intestines, that is likely the problem. Or maybe it is nothing at all. But I can tell you that my dog has extensive spinal disease and when she is sore, she does this after eating. It can most definitely be a symptom. She does it a lot when first waking up too...

Thank you LadyJane for posting Sammy's video. This is exactly what Yazmin has been doing, only in a more exaggerated motion. It reminds me of a human taking a long stretch after sitting or laying too long. But I can definitely see the bowing motion in Sammy! Poor little guy. I had to smile though because he sure looks like he's loving his breakfast!
I took video of Yazmin eating this morning but again, she didn't bow after eating. Actually since I've been mixing a small portion of the Royal Canin with the Blue Wilderness the past 2 days, she's not bowed once, nor have I had to hand fed her! She's been vigorously eating the RC first, then eating the Blue. Tonight as I was mixing the kibbles I received an important text that I had to answer. For the first time EVER, Yazi was having a barking fit wanting her food...NOW!
I still took her to my vet after work and told him the changes I've been noticing recently and my concerns, including AAI. He examined her throughly and found nothing on the surface other than the eye tearing and the condition of her hair. They have a 5x7 photo of her on their wall that was taken in April and he could see the difference in her hair being thinner now and the obvious breakage.
The staff called their larger clinic and we have an appointment on Wednesday at 1:30 PM for ex-rays and blood work.
I hope this post doesn't sound too ivasive but I admit, I'm exhausted right now and seem to be rambling at this point. I've been up since 3:00 AM , went to work by 4:00 until 3:30 PM. Then straight to the vets office. It's now after 9:00 PM and I have to be up again tomorrow at the same time and off to work.
Thank you to everyone for caring about my girl and I'll keep you updated on her outcome. Have a nice evening and a blessed day tomorrow.

Aw, I'm so sorry she has a spinal disease. I hate that these little ones have to deal with so many different health issues. I pray she's not in a lot of pain!
Thank you for telling me the proper word to better explain this, "play bow". That discribes it perfectly.

Default Update on Bowing After Eastin

I'm sorry for not updating sooner but I've been trying to get Yazmin to eat, and it's been a daily struggle! The good news is she had x-rays done and there's no signs of any problems with her neck or spine. At this point she seems to be choking and gagging and coughing when trying to swallow any hard kibble. She's not bowing any longer but I think it's because she's refusing to eat anything hard. I started her on canned food over the weekend and she's at least eating now without choking. I took her back to the vet on Moday and he also checked her teeth and found nothing wrong. The vet think's she could possiably have a bacterial infection in her throat so he put her on a antibiotics for 10 days and said to continue feeding her canned food for now. Hopefully this will solve this problem, I'm praying!
Has anyone ever heard of a bacterial infection of the throat or have any thoughts on what else this may be?
I may need to figure out how to move this thread over to the Sick & Injured.

Yes, I think AllDog Boots' older dog Cooper was treated for a throat infection at one point. Could the vet see her trachea on the xrays? I'm not sure about bowing, but I have seen my dog doing some slo motion squirmy movements while trying to pass a foreign object. Maybe the bowing is helping to move the food along? Just random thoughts....

You can PM a moderator or admin and ask for the thread to be moved... or I can if you want....

Thanks for the info on Cooper, I'll ask her about his symptoms. The vet didn't say anything about seeing her trachea on the xrays last week and actually seems to be perplexed about her symptoms. At this point he seems to be grasping for answers which has me a little worried. He did say that if she isn't better by Monday, he will consider taking xrays of her throat.

If you could move this thread for me, I would really appreciate your help.
BTW... Could you also correct all the misspelled words also? Lol.
Yazmin's always stepping on my keys while I'm typing and some still slip by me before I catch it. Frustrating!

I am so sorry that I hadn't seen this thread sooner! It is great news that the xrays didn't show anything unusual. Cooper did indeed have a bacterial throat infection about 2 years ago. He didn't appear to struggle with eating but he really didn't have much of an appetite. He was coughing, swallowing very hard and gagging and I actually thought he had allergies so I wasn't very proactive. When the unusual swallowing didn't stop I brought him to the vet to find out that he had a very high temperature and a fairly severe throat infection. He was on antibiotics for 10 days which cleared up the infection.

I hope that the antibiotics will help Yazmin. I wonder if the possible throat infection is even related to the bowing. Hopefully she will feel fine in a few days.

Thank you Karen, I wonder myself. It may be as kjc suggested, helped to move the food along. Maybe it's hard for her to swallow.

Sammy used to gag on his food and regurgitate it at times.......I had to give him canned food and he did better, but I was having to hand feed him very slowly. When he was at A&M the tech put water in it and he did just fine....I have done that since and he has not had any further issues.

Definitely an infection could cause that. I am glad that her xrays were fine!

Thank you Perrella. I read so many threads in the Sick & Injured that has moved to tears, my heart breaks for these babies and their owners. I've been so greatful that Yazmin's been so healthy until now. Hopefully things will turn around soon. I appreciate your concern.

Max had a throat problem relatively recently and we aren't sure if it was an infection or if he swallowed something that irritated his throat. Antibiotics and a steroid helped him. It took about 3 weeks for him to be back to 100%.

I pray Yazmin feels better soon. I'm so glad her xrays returned good news.
