| Eye ulcer Hi everyone, My Tinkerbell was diagnosed yesterday with having an eye ulcer, she was given 3 types of drops, Neo poly b 3.5gm, Atropine 3.5gm and drops Flurbiprofin 2.5ml. The first two are actual ointments. All of these are two times a day, I thought it was to much to give her but anything to make her eyes better. She was also given hydroxyzine(2x a day) for allergies but it says it can cause 3rd eyelid??! This medication actually makes her drowsy and sleepy In addition to that, antibiotics for an ear infection. She's on her 2nd day of meds and I actually had to call the vet because her eyes looked green!...she assured me it's because of the atropine which dilates her pupils. Is this true? Tink use to be on Natural Balance duck & potato and she did well on it but noticed she was not eating it anymore. We have a boxer who eats pro-plan and Tink seemed to like it alot more....big mistake! Tink started to lose hair around the eyes and hair became dull with dandruff....the vet thinks it's food allergies and recommended I put her back on Natural balance or Science Diet prescription ZD. Well I purchased NB and she wouldn't touch it, got her ZD(vet gave me an rx) and she LOVES IT!! won't stop eating it and the kibbles are not small and she eats it. Anyways, Have any of you experienced your yorkies with an eye ulcer? Do you think she's being over-medicated? Tink is going for a follow up this Monday morning...I'm just worried. |

| Poor Tinkerbell. Max has had eye ulcers and they are no fun. Ulcers are very painful. If you haven't already, put an e-collar on her to prevent her from rubbing or scratching the eye. Usually the eye meds are prescribed 3-4 times a days. That may only be for drops. I don't recall if the salve was only 2 times a day because Max only had that briefly. The meds are to prevent infection while the eye heals itself. Typically, atropine is not advised because it slows the healing process. If Tinkerbell's eye has not healed significantly within 3-4 days, I would insist on different meds. Max had tri-thalmic drops the first couple of times, and for the last ulcer, he had Ofloxacin, a very strong antibiotic. I don't have any experience with allergies, so I don't know about that med. You should have Tinkerbell tested for dry eye after her ulcer has healed. The dry eye test has to be done before the flueroscein dye test to check the corneal ulcer. Best wishes to your little girl. Hope she gets some relief soon.

| Kayla only had the eye drops twice a day and did fine. That does seem like an awful lot for her eyes. Have no idea because I am sure not an authority on it but I would really be careful when it comes to the eyes. Ulcers are very painful and Kayla has had them in both eyes at different times. Hope your baby gets well soon. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Meds sound right. I see no problem with them. If that's what the vet prescribed then I'd stick to it. Just make sure you are waiting 5-10 minutes in between each medication otherwise you could just be flushing one out with the other. THIRD EYELID??? OMG she can develop another eye lid from medication???? hahahaha, j/k. don't mean to freak you out. A lot of animals have third eye lids. Most people don't know about them because they rarely see them. The third eyelid is like a protective shield and "blinks" horizontally instead of vertically. check it out: Nictitating membrane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Its easiest to see them on sleepy kitties cats facts: why do cats have a third eyelid? The reason the hydroxyzine label mentions the third eyelid is because anti-histamines can cause drowsiness and drowsiness causes "sleepy eyes". so the third eyelid might appear because the eye muscles are too tired to keep it open. dogs and cats have less muscle control over the third eyelid muscles then say a manatee who uses the third eyelid to protect its eyes underwater, or the peregrin falcon who uses the third eyelid to protect its eyes while doing a high speed air dive. Oh, also, if you suspect food allergies and are going to keep her on the Z/D then make sure that is the ONLY food to enter her body. No treats or people food, or chews/bones/edible items of any kind. She needs to be strictly on the Z/D for 3 months to ensure accurate results. You may see improvements before 3 months but still stick with the strict diet.

| Thank you all for your quick replies. Tink does have an e-collar on, I'm pretty surprised she has gotten so use to it. She got a bath today but I wasn't sure I should've, though the vet did give me a special shampoo for her itchy skin. I feel I'm over-medicating her with hydroxyzin,it says to give it to her 2x a day but she is so sleepy during the day. I just started to feed her Science Diet but was only given an rx for the dry food, would I need one for the cans and treats too? |

As for the eye meds, I believe they are all in order. My vet uses a concoction for eye ulcers that has pretty much the same meds in it. Good luck .. hope her eye heals well and quickly!

The eye drops that I have used for my pups when they had eye ulcers have atropine in them and are used more frequently than what you have prescribed. Hopefully that will put your mind at ease. Here are the directions given for those drops: DOSE= 1-2 DROPS Q HOUR ON DAY1, THEN 1-2 DROPS Q 3 HOURS ON DAY 2, THEN 4-6 X/DAY. RECHECK IN 5 DAYS.

| Just wanted everyone to know that Tink's follow up visit today went great! Vet says both her eyes are healing beautifully and to continue the meds for a few more days and one more follow up this Friday. But...the vet did mention that Tink will have a dot in her eye, that she will see that when she sees anything, does that mean she will have a scar due to the ulcer? |

| Yes the dot would be d/t a scar in the eye. Depending upon it's location will determine how/if it is detrimental to the vision. If not on the visual axis(in the middle) it will not be a big deal. The meds were in order. You were given a broad spectrum antibiotic/ an NSAID (pain reliever)/ and a mydriatic (dilator) to minimize pain and inflammation in the eye. The same categories of medicine are given to humans who get corneal ulcers. |

If Tinkerbell does end up with some scarring, take heart, it doesn't really interfere with their overall vision. Do you know what caused the ulcers? Whatever the cause, be careful with cleansers in the bath. I use Spa facial cleanser on Max. It's extra gentle. I also make sure to only use luke-warm water on his head. In the past, I think I was running the water too hot.
