| I've had a run in or two with my dogs and collar issues and a harness getting hung on something do I don't leave anything on my dog for safety sake. Your post was a terrible reminder why is it so important to keep these little guys free of things that can harm or even kill them. I am just so glad Zach is okay and you were fast to get that collar off before he choked to death! And that you were out there with your dog - not sitting in the house while the dogs played. It sounds silly to say you cannot leave them for a moment without taking a chance on something going wrong but things like this keep reinforcing that thought! Thank goodness!!!

| On some other thread I was reading yesterday, the OP talked about breakaway collars for cats that they used on their yorkies. Apparently they're pretty cheap (like $2.00) and the closure opens with a tug. Intended for cats who get hung up in trees and stuff so they can free themselves. This person said she used them for tags but a harness, of course, for walks, as the collar would come off if the dog started pulling at the leash. FYI. |

I can tell you from this experience breakaway collars don't work. When Zach and Zoe got into the mix they were both wearing breakaway collars and they didn't open I had to cut the collar off Zach. Zoe's worked after a fight with it. The best collar for small dogs is no collar I learned the hard way I also had them on my cats and for the most part they didn't work either. Since my cats are all indoor cats they don't wear collars either. |

| I'm glad he is ok. How scary that must have been for you. I am for sure now going to get the Kitty break away collars. There was just a thread on here about those collars. Hugs to you and Zach. Btw Zach is my sons name.

| Thank God you were there and a quick thinker! What a scary incident. I had an incident many years ago where one of my pups was jumping up and down in the kitchen while I was preparing food and she got caught on the handle of a drawer. She was just hanging there. I shudder to think what might have happened had I not been there. Collars can indeed be very dangerous!

| We stopped using collars when our Peach got her little lower jaw hooked under her collar and was choking herself. I heard a strange noise from upstairs and found her hacking, drooling and choking. The collar was pulled too tight to unbuckle, so my quick-thinking hubby grabbed the scissors and cut it off. Whew! Makes me shiver just thinking about it. So glad Zach is on the mend.

| You know you would never think of something like that happening, but, long before our yorkies, we had Mandy, a min. schnauzer and Tina is a very very small schnauzer, about the same size as our yorkies. When she was younger she liked to get up on Mandy and pull on her collar. I was on a long distance phone call and heard her screaming. She had gotten her teeth hung in Mandy's collar and Mandy was just slinging her round and round. I threw the phone half way across the room, screaming too and finally got her loose. Our situation was alittle different since Mandy was bigger and Tina was the one getting hurt. Scared me to death. From then on I put the collars on them that had a more smooth, slicky material, and never had another problem. But, collars are dangerous and I will never forget that day. So, so, glad your baby is okay. It could have been a real tragedy and almost was. Thank God you were there. My yorkies don't wear collars and my 2 schnauzers do wear collars, but, very loosely. I never kennel them with a collar though. |

| Paris: Always in my ♥ Donating YT Member | Glad Zach is ok, I never put a collar on Paris either. Once, when he was little He wore a collar and while I was at work it got caught in his mouth. By the time I got home his whole chest was covered in drool and he had a look of terror in his eyes. I felt so bad, I still feel bad when I think of it. He has never had a collar on since. www.paristheblindwonderdog.blogspot.com |
