| Hind leg stretching after not eating Hi, Moose stayed at Pet Paradise resort over the weekend and somehow got into something that caused tummy upset for him (our guess is he had some beef which he doensn't tolerate). He had diarhhea for a couple days then finally started feeling better yesterday after a bland diet and lots of rest. But this morning he did not want to eat anything- not plain chicken, rice, pumpkin or his regular food. I haven't been able to get him to eat all day. He's acting like he wants to throw up but hasn't yet. And he'll be laying down then all of a sudden get up and walk while stretching his hind legs very deeply. He'll do this 3 or 4 times and then lay down again. Is the stretching a sign of bloating or gas from not eating?? thanks for the help! |

| It can be gas. That is also a symptom of a back issue though. I wonder if he did something to his back while away? He isn't laying flat on his side (instead of curling up), right? Certainly could be the intestines and that would fit with the other symptoms. He should go get checked out.

| Yes, my Yorkie has done it and she has disc disease. I assume it's intestinal with yours, but you never know until the vet looks. So yes, it could be an extremely serious problem. Time for an exam. If it's just the intestines, the vet can give something to settle things down in there.

| You can call the vet and see if they are okay with you trying gas drops for a day first or something they could prescribe without going in. No panting, heavy breathing, laying in weird positions, hesitancy to jump/climb/walk/play? Doesn't want to eat still? This is very concerning. That is one thing Ellie's vet won't wait around too long and watch without testing. With all of these symptoms, he should be seen asap.

| Agree with the vet visit.. in the mean time have you tried elevating his food bowl? Sometimes with back issues it's easier for them to eat out of an elevated bowl....

No panting or heavy breathing or laying in weird positions. But he hasn't wanted to play all day, because he hasn't eaten so he's lethargic. Haven't thought of raising his food bowl but will do that also- On a side note, he will do this sometimes where he won't eat first thing in the morning, then he'll spend all day wanting to lay around and with tummy upset, sometimes throwing up bile from an empty tummy- because he didn't eat in the morning. He's always been a finicky eater and we have to come up with ways to make sure he eats in the morning. It's such a cycle because if we take his food up early in the evening so that he'll be hungry in the morning, he still won't want to eat in the morning. Then he'll start the process again.. | |

| Pancreatitis would be another concern. Have you palpated his abdomen? How long has it been since the GI issues started? Hopefully your vet is in in the morning.

| I hadn't thought of pancreatitis either- I just tried pushing his abdomen and it doesn't seem to bother him? Either way Moose is definitely going to the vet now! Because.. We boiled some chicken to entice him to eat and chopped it up in our food processor so it would be easy for him to digest. We put it in his bowl and we were so happy that he started to eat it. Then I went back over to scrape the rest of the chicken out of the food processor and I smelled Dawn dishwashing liquid. It turns out we had squirted a bit in the food processor the other day to wash it and forgot- so the liquid had dried and we didn't notice it before we put the chicken in to chop it up! Dawn is poisonous! We immediately got on the phone with poison control and the ER vet and they both say he should be fine that it probably wasn't much but im worried absolutely sick about him now |

| What kind of Dawn do you use? Plain, original Dawn is used to clean animals and birds caught in oil spills... if it was toxic I don't think it could be used for that purpose. Antibacterial Dawn is another story. Sometimes there may be a number to call on the bottle.... they may have some ideas of what to do.

| Thanks so much kjc- I started reading that online actually after it happened and I didn't even realize you can clean dogs with it. Our dawn is Apple Scented Odor Eraser, but not anti-bacterial (it will be plain, original Dawn from now on just in case an accident happens!) We've been so careful and this is this first time anything like this occured and it just happened to when he was already sick, poor guy. Thankfully Moose was fine, we talked to several different people and since he didn't actually [I]lick it up[I] they said he would okay so we watched him for hours and hours and he showed no signs of trouble. Better than that he actually ate and got over his little tummy upset. He's eating lots this morning and playing so hopefully he's all better Thanks to everyone who replied and helped! I love YT Forums, they help so much Last edited by LBH; 06-04-2011 at 05:29 AM. |

| Update: Moose sick after boarding again! Hi everyone.. An update on Moose- He has stayed at Pet Paradise Resort everytime we've went out of town for over 2 years now. He has never had a problem there before and is SO happy to go there that we can't even say the word "Pet Paradise" or he gets so excited to go that we can't do anything with him! He absolutely loves it there and we've never brought him back from there where he was sick in over 2 years now. That being said, for his last 3 visits, he has returned with vomiting/and or diarrhea every single time. Although the staff is noticing and treating the tummy upset they have no explanation as to why it is happening and no other dogs are sick. The only thing they have changed is their food policy- they will no longer leave food down all day because of food gorging. Moose is a grazer and eats throughout the day so I am wondering if this could be the source? They agreed to put food out 3x a day and they said he was eating however the diarrhea has occurred the last 3 visits he has had there. We have always adored Pet Paradise for the attention and care they give to Moose and it is handsdown his favorite place to be- but him being sick 3x in a row upon returning means something is going wrong there- and they have no explanations. I am taking Moose to the vet tomm am to see if they can help but in the meantime...any ideas as to why this is happening everytime? 1. Boarding is stressful? But Moose loves it there so so much and cannot wait to go everytime. 2. Not eating? They are not leaving his food out all day but say that he eats most of his meals. 3. Pancreatitis? 4. He had LP and corrective surgery a year and a half ago and his back legs are usually pretty sore after returning home because he plays so much with the other dogs there. Would this cause diarrhea everytime? Sorry for the long 3am post- I've been up with him all night long! Thanks guys! |
