I can sympathize with you. MY pup got a hold of one of my mom's blood pressure pills and I was at work when she called me about it. She rushed the pup to the ER and he came out just fine. I'll pray that your little ones come out the same.

Isn't that still in the normal range? Are they saying differently? Here is a reference I found on line to verify that number is usually well within normal.

"Normal blood sugar values for a dog run between 65- 110 mg/dl, but can be a little higher if the dog is stressed, excited, or shortly after eating. The glucometers that you use at home do tend to provide readings that are lower than the actual blood glucose level. But in your case, this is actually beneficial. Since your are monitoring for low blood sugar as a result of a history of insulinoma, this will hopefully catch your dog before his levels go too far down.
If his readings are in the 65- 70 range, feed him- preferably something dense in carbohydrates, and then re-check 1/2- 1 hour later. If it is below 65, feed him and run him into your vet for a blood glucose on the Chemistry analyzer and possibly some dextrose intravenously.

Read more: Pet Questions - canine blood sugar levels - JustAnswer http://www.justanswer.com/pet/084zs-canine-blood-sugar-levels.html#ixzz1KdVWjIIK" This was answered online by a vet.

I am very curious -- is this vet's office saying that 78 is something to be distressed about? I am not understanding at all. It seems like they should be reassuring you at this point, not trying to panic you.

On the last page of this article it recommends to give IV glucose and a liver protectant.... I would call and make sure this is being done....

Typo: should say IV dextrose, and if over .5 grams/kg xylitol was ingested. Onset of symptoms usually occurs 30-60 minutes after ingestion.

I wanted to make sure on the reference I listed before and investigated some more. Found several listing the same and also some listing normal fasting glucose level for dogs to be between 75 and 120 mg per deciliter. So your dog is still within the norm and probably in the fasting time period now if they have not been fed since the ingestion of the tiny pieces of meat.

Also thought about what you said about the meat -- you took the pieces from inside and not from the outer layer which had the BBQ sauce on it. I really don't thnk you have anything to worry about.

Are they keeping them for 24 hours or 72 hours? Sometimes they keep them for just 24 hours and then you bring them back periodically up to 72 hours for more glucose & liver function testing. Pls let us know what you find out.

Thank you all so much for your love and concern, and for keeping my mind busy while I have to wait the 48 hours to see if they will survive. I have been up most of the night off and on. My mind is ragged, but I welcome the opportunity to answer your questions. Thank you all so so much. They say Cassie is vomiting now, not from inducing the vomiting as they did before, but they think it is because they are feeding her so frequently. They will do the first liver panel tonight at 8PM. Please please all, continue to pray for my tiny babies. Blessings to you all.

FIDebra, thank you for your concern and your response. The girls are getting dextrose and liver support through an IV. Yes, one would think that they would have ingested so little that it would not harm them. But it goes according to weight of the dog to the amount ingested. As Cassie and Muffin, but especially Cassie are so tiny, a very little bit can be fatal. That is how poisonous Xylitol is. And yes, they were giving without symptoms. They say Cassies blood sugar has gone up a bit to 95 where the doctor says she is more comfortable. After they induced vomiting Cassie did not vomit up any meat, but Muffin did. Cassie is eating now but Muffin isn't.

That will counteract any hypoglycemic episode -- but not sure if they would administer that without seeing symptoms and one of them spitting up a little meat is really not enough of a symptom.

I have read that .5 g of xylitol can cause liver failure. That is more than what's in one stick of gum. So, I think to reassure yourself, you might want to figure out how much they might have consumed. How much was in the amount of syrup you used for the marinade? How much of the marinade did not absorb with the meat? Probablya lot left over right? So, I am thinking there was probably very little actually on the meat itself. Now, how much meat did they eat? Probably a tiny percentage of the total, right? I am trying to help you feel better about this because the likelihood that their little pieces of meat really had enough xylitol in them to hurt them is minimal at best. I think you are going to find your babies are just fine!

I would never intentionally give them anything with xylitol but in the case where they ingest a tiny amount of meat that might have absorbed a little marinade -- I doubt you have any worries. I commend you for taking them in to make sure! But pls don't beat yourself up too much. I feel pretty sure they will be just fine!

Thanks for letting us know how the girls are doing. We will keep them in our prayers - especially for these 8 pm blood tests. I am sure you are mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted, but you are such a good mommie getting these girls the care they need right away! Please keep in touch - we will by praying and waiting with you!

The ER said that in spite of the fact that Cassie was eating consistantly and was getting IV dextrose, her sugar kept going down to 78. Now it is up to 95. I think the Doc. was concerned because Cassie is so tiny and she was eating and getting IV dextrose and with all that her sugars were dropping. Cassie or Muffin never threw up on their own, they were induced by medication from the Clinic when I first brought them in. But now Cassie is throwing up a little bit on her own. They are hoping it is because she is being fed so much. she has a tiny tiny stomach.

I am praying they both make a full and speedy recovery and are back in your arms soon. I banned gum from my house when I found out on here that it can be lethal to our babies. I never thought to look what else it is in.

I am so very lucky to have known about this. You are right, it is not common knowledge about xylitol, and I believe all packaging, even human food, as we often times give human food to our best friends, should be labeled as toxic to dogs if xylitol is in the ingredient list. The way I knew about xylitol was that I went to my natural foods, whole foods, market, and I was looking for a good sweetner for my dad, as he has diabetes. The people there are great and were telling me all about stuff like Stevia and other sweetners. But the owner warned me about Xylitol, stating that if you have dogs, it can kill them in a New York Minute, so to speak. Very very very very toxic, poisonous. A killer for dogs. Most people don't know this. People beware. Check all your sugarfree items if you have them and throw them out if they have xylitol. So I am lucky to have known, from my SPROUTS Natural Foods Market. So I'm saying here, any gum, cake, or the sweetner powder itself,
dogs can get into them. I myself forgot to check the label of the maple syrup, only after they ate did I realize I need to check the label. And then my nightmare began. All Yorkie lovers, take heed, if you use artificial sweetners. Much love, Shellie

Please keep up posted on how they are doing. You are very lucky to have caught it quickly and rushed them into the ER clinic.
