| My girls ate xylitol-I cannot stop crying Today I made a bbq and used sugarfree maple syrup as part of a marinade. Did not remember to check to see what the sweetner was before I gave them a few tiny pieces of meat each. It was xylitol. I was so hysterical I immediately took them to the ER. They are there now. Cassie is 2.5 lbs and Muffin is 4lbs. Muffin threw up the some meat but Cassie did not throw up any meat. I gave the them center of the meat not the crust where most of the marinade was, maybe 4 or 5 tiny pieces each. I cannot stop crying. I keep thinking I killed my girls. They will not know for 48 hours if they are in liver failure. They say there is nothing that can be done if they are in liver failure. I am sick to my soul. Please Pray for Cassie and Muffin. I have thrown out every product with artificial sweetner in the house. How could I have done this to my own sweet babies? I am inconsolable. |

| I'm praying for your babies. I'm so sorry you are going through this. I did not know artificial sweeteners were that bad for dogs. Hopefully when I check this site again, there will be good news.

| I am thinking it would be unusual for them to have ingested enough xylitol just from a sugar-free maple syrup based marinade to give them either hypoglycemia or liver failure. You would see the signs of hypoglycemia. Is the ER vet giving them dextrose? That will counteract any hypoglycemic episode -- but not sure if they would administer that without seeing symptoms and one of them spitting up a little meat is really not enough of a symptom. I have read that .5 g of xylitol can cause liver failure. That is more than what's in one stick of gum. So, I think to reassure yourself, you might want to figure out how much they might have consumed. How much was in the amount of syrup you used for the marinade? How much of the marinade did not absorb with the meat? Probablya lot left over right? So, I am thinking there was probably very little actually on the meat itself. Now, how much meat did they eat? Probably a tiny percentage of the total, right? I am trying to help you feel better about this because the likelihood that their little pieces of meat really had enough xylitol in them to hurt them is minimal at best. I think you are going to find your babies are just fine! I would never intentionally give them anything with xylitol but in the case where they ingest a tiny amount of meat that might have absorbed a little marinade -- I doubt you have any worries. I commend you for taking them in to make sure! But pls don't beat yourself up too much. I feel pretty sure they will be just fine!
