Griffin has not improved, and I am waiting for the bile
acid test this morning.
He has been hospitalized and on I.V. Fluids, with
Lactulose...or Lactose, can't remember I am so upset.
My vet said, the Lactulose can bind to proteins and with
low protein diets he may do well.
Has anyone used this Lactulose?
I am on four days with little to no sleep and very
emotional....
Wouldn't you know, it would be the one dog after all these years...that I would have such a strong bond with , that would be sick......
As much as I love my little guy...I need to do what is best for him.
Any and all suggestions I value from this group.

Please let us know his BAT numbers when you get them. Prayers for your little boy.

Lots of dogs with liver issues use lactulose, along with a low-protein diet.

Please know - that liver shunt or other liver issues does NOT mean a death sentence.

There are lots of yorkies on here with liver problems ranging from mild to severe. Some required surgery; some are able to be managed with low protein diet; lactulose, etc.

So please hang in there and don't give up.

Hang in there. If he has a Liver Shunt or MVD it's not a death sentence, just gotta get to the bottom of it and onto the right path.

Yes, low protein diet (RC Heaptic LS 14) is a good choice. Lactulose is great too! He may need to be on it daily and perhaps with a low dose of antib's as well.

Feeding 5 to 6 small meals a day (spread out) and lots of water help to control the HE episodes. If he refuses to eat, Children's Vanilla Pedisure w/fiber helps to maintain them until they start to feel better and want to eat the kibble.

ok yorkie brother and sisters.....here's the latest.
GRiffin was admitted early this morning after
his BAT was normal. (*whew)
although.....I asked if he could be hypoglycemic...and
the vet said....she was going to try him on dextrose
in the subcutanious fluids.
So far, he is doing well....no signs of seizures....perked up
alot....was acting like a rottweiler with other dogs etc.
Here the thing......she is wondering if there is an underlying cause for the hypoglycemia....or if in fact he is just not
eating enough to maintain is glucose level.
The mystery to me.....is....he is refusing food...
why would he refuse food?
Now today at the hospital, they hand fed him and he did
eat.....which is new since this started Saturday.
any thoughts and imput .....please feel free!

When I got Cali she had several hypoglycemic episodes. She was a terrible eater. I had to try and get her to eat ever few hours. I tried everything. The one thing she would eat was Ceasar's canned food, which is junk food but I had to get her to eat. Her Bile Acid test results showed a very mild MVD (tiny internal shunt) but it was so mild the vet didn't put her on any special meds or diet. She was having episodes until she was over 8 months old. She grew out of it and became a little chow hound. I hope that your baby will grow out of it and you can find a food he will eat regularly.

its such a chore to get anything into that little body.

what was her weight and age when you got her?

Sending prayers for you and your little guy. I hope you find the cause for his episodes. Buster was such a finicky eater when he was a pup I must have tried over 20 different kinds of foods to get him to eat. I spent so much time trying to get him to eat in the beginning I was so excited he was finally eating I did not notice that I soon had a Porkie instead of a Yorkie. I wish you all the best in finding the food he likes and hope it is no more than another finicky Yorkie. Are there any treats he especially likes that you could try crumbling on his food? I hope you find a solution and are able to get some rest for yourself. It is so scary when these little ones are sick and we feel so helpless. Best wishes.

Hi, My little Jack is 4 yrs old and weighs 3 lbs. He was always a terrible eater and we probably spent about $4000.00 in vet bills in the last 4 yrs. The best thing we did was getting a ragdoll kitten, the cat is about the only thing that will get Jack to eat,he has no interest in his food unless the cat is near. He'll chase the cat away and then eat,it's the greatest!

not sure,ragdolls are known for being very laid back and he lets Jack be in charge. Mojo (the cat) doesn't eat Jacks food but it seems that whenever he comes around Jack's food, Jack jumps up and eats as if to say "I'm the boss and I eat first!" It's pretty cute especially since ragdolls are muscular and he weighs 25lbs to Jack's 3lbs.lol
