after 6 l/2 hours he is ok again.
 

I am at my wits end...my very small yorkie,
refuses to eat...consequently his blood sugars go low.
I've been giving him nutrical, to help with that.
Today he decided he isn't eating anything...
kibble or otherwise....
Yesterday he had some kind of a 7 hour episode...
scurring to a spot on the floor then plopping down...
five seconds later same thing...over and over and over..
hovering up against the wall.....disoriented....
I think I know what it sounds like but if the little guy
is refusing food...I need to work fast.
I am just sick over this......it would sure help if I was to hear something encouraging.....

I'm sorry to hear your having problems with your little Yorkie. I'm no expert but maybe if you could give a little more information about your Yorkie someone will jump in. Maybe the pup's age and history?
I know how upsetting it is when you have a sick baby or they refuse to eat when they are so tiny! I'll keep you in my thoughts for a resolution.

he is 10 months old, and 3.1 pounds.....
he has never been a great eater...
although lately.....there is nothing that even
tempts him :(

tomorrow I am going back to my vet to see what he
thinks.....he does seem bright this morning...
not sure how he can be....with so little food in that tiny body.......:(

Seven hours of restlessness and disorientation? What is the vet saying? Hypoglycemia is only one thing that needs to be ruled out here.

I have been giving him nutri cal, and pedialyte, as
there is no doubt ...he would be low blood sugar...

My vet feels they need to do a test this week
I am going to try and get hold of him tomorrow.

food to low protein, to see if I notice a diff.

I agree. If he isn't eating, it is going to go low. If it was just hypoglycemia, Nutrical should cause a big improvement within a few minutes of giving it.

Liver and neuro issues sound much more likely.

I would try to suggest things to feed just until he sees the vet tomorrow, but it sounds like you've tried everything.

Your vet may be talking about a bile acids test to check his liver function. If something is wrong in this area, he may not be eating because food makes these dogs feel sick.

I would definitely have this baby's BAT done to check his liver....I know how strssful having a sick baby can be. Good luck!

How often do you give the Nutrical? I personaly have low blood sugar episodes and, when it's absolutely neccessary, I will use something sweet to raise them but I feel much better if I eat something with protein. I can't imagine eating something sweet everytime my sugar level drops only to have that wear off and it drop again...

My vet recommended using baby food (mushed chicken or beef) for our little ones when travelling. He said Nutrical raises the blood sugar up high, which is good when that is needed, but then it drops the blood sugar again...causing the problem you are trying to avoid and it can just make the problem worse if it's given again and again.

You might want to talk with your vet about the baby food...no, it's not the 'ideal' diet...but it might help until you can get this under control.

Have you had the liver checked?

I read your other post about your baby spitting out the food you were putting in his mouth. Have you tried home cooking? I use chicken breast and vegetables for mine and they have never once turned it down. It's an easy recipe done in the crock pot or on the stove...I'd be glad to share it with you if you want to give it a try.

I completely agree. I would have this baby's bile acids checked asap. Call ahead and let them know you want to do this test, bc it will need to be a fasting test. I suggest you get it done just as soon as you can, bc liver issues can be toxic to the brain.

When a puppy (or dog) loses their appetite - that is another reason to see the vet immediately.

I agree with the bile acid testing. Lucy has had several and they are relatively inexpensive.

Lack of appetite is one sign of liver issues.

I will say that Lucy had an 'episode' when she was a puppy that intially started out as gas. She would run somewhere; flop down; could not get comfortable; run somewhere else; flop down . . . etc.

She had gas. The vet said that sometimes puppies run away from it because it hurts their tummy; they don't understand what it is and are just trying to get away from it.

My son still laughs that Lucy had to go to the vet because she didn't know how to 'fart'.

However, she also has liver issues and we found out by requesting a bile acid test right after this episode.

I agree with the bile acid test as well. I'm afraid for your baby. For what it's worth my vet does the bile acid test for my breeding dogs and it was about $80 so not that terribly expensive. Good luck and please keep us posted. In the meantime, have you tried chicken breast and brown rice? WHATEVER you can get him to eat at this time is important even if it's not the most balanced.

I am afraid I agree with you all....I've been researching
and talking to vet....I am taking him for bile acid test tomorrow...
The poor little guy won't eat a thing and he is starting to turn his head when he see's me coming with yet again, another syringe.

I have been giving him pedialyte....and mothers milk,
called esbilac....which I mix and squirt on his tongue.
He seems to be tolerating this mixture.

earlier I did get about a teaspoon of low protein wet food down, and it came back up soon after.
Due to the situation......I have to resort to nutri cal more than I would....however am trying to wait, until I see
signs of him going low....
TOday I had to raise my voice when he was sleeping..
he was sleeping too deeply...

THis HAS to be tested tomorrow.....we need to move fast......I am so terribly upset, and very sleep deprived....

unfortunately I have to agree with getting the BAT done. That's the first thing I thought of when I read he was disorientated and hovering against the walls...

I can't offer anything advice wise but am keeping your baby and you in my prayers. I sure hope your vet can find out what is wrong and get him some help quick.
