| Help! Knox is not doing well Ok long story as short as I can make it.....Knox had his baby teeth pulled last Tuesday (6 days ago) and he is doing horrible right now. He went to the vet this morning because on Sunday he was shaking horribly and when I pick him up he yelps. Of course I have been giving him Nutri-Cal since the weird behavior started....but we found out he has lost a pound in the last week. He is just at just over 2 pounds right now! He is basically refusing to eat. I am totally freaking out and at a loss on what to do. The vet gave him some pain medicine and antibiotic and thinks it is because of his teeth being pulled. I am just so confused because he was totally fine on Wednesday-Saturday. Here is my problem....why on Earth is he yelping when I pick him up if it is his teeth? He doesn't do it everytime but has never done it before. Any ideas? Also is there some soft human food I can maybe give him that he could eat easily? I was thinking maybe it would encourage him to eat. I am so upset and have been in tears most of the day Please pray that my baby will be okay.

| Try feeding him soft foods like canned dog food or chicken cut into tiny pieces with rice and chicken broth. I think there is more going on than the teeth for him to have lost weight. Both of mine have had teeth pulled and I didnt get that kind of reaction from them. Also there is no reason for him to yelp when you pick him up if its his teeth. I would get another vet opinion

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry about Knox. I would get another vets opinion. Nikki was 15 years old and had all his teeth pulled and major gum work and within 2 days was doing fine. I would be concerned about the weight loss and the yelping when being picked up. Is her still on the pain medication? Could he be having a reaction to that. I would want a second opinion. He is too tiny to not be eating. Keep us posted.

| So sorry to hear that you and Knox are going thru this. Could he have hurt himself running or jumping causing him to yelp when you pick him up? I can't see how the yelping would have to do with the teeth. I hope he is better soon. |

| Thats what I thought about the yelping as well was maybe he hurt himself and I just didn't know it. Of course he yelped when I picked him up to take him into the vet but then he did nothing when the vet and his helper picked him up. He wasn't on the pain meds anymore I only gave them to him through Wednesday because he seemed totally fine. He continued to be totally normal from what I could tell until first thing Sunday morning. I will keep everyone updated.....I am trying to decide if I should take him to maybe a walk-in type vet clinic or wait until tomorrow and try and schedule something with another vet. My vet has always been wonderful and knows how freaked out I am about Knox....but I don't know what to do next.

| That isn't right. A handful of vets don't know how to pull teeth correctly, so that would be a concern, but shouldn't make him yelp. I'd be slightly concerned that they accidentally did another procedure. Or, did they give a vaccine? That's way too much weight to lose and I would get a second opinion immediately.

YT Addict | Sound Advice The previous advice is sound. You did not mention how long you have used your veterinarian or how old your baby is. If you got Knox from a reputable breeder you should phone them as well since they may have some insight. If not definitely find another veterinarian recommended by friends, good vets who truly care are difficult to find or take your baby to the ER if you are as alarmed as your post feels. I'm sure I was known as a neurotic Mom with my now Angel Gizmo but I say better safe than sorry. I was going to suggest the chicken and rice as well and depending on how old the darling is you may want to blend to the consistency of baby food and hand feed. Human baby food is ok but since Gizzy's renal failure I would worry about phospherous levels in the food especially if he is yelping on pick up. Please hon if you are super worried take him to another vet.

| I agree that a second opinion is in order -- Am I reading correctly that you had a 3 pound dog and he lost 1 pound -- leaving him at 2 pounds? That is way too much weight loss for one week! I would have thought they would want to keep him hospitalized and give fluids for that drastic of a loss. That is a third of his body weight in a week! Infection should be easy enough to identify! Was there fever? What did the gums look like? Did they do blood tests? This is pretty serious. Yorkies can go down so quickly. I would not hesitate. I would make an appointment at another vet, prefrably one with animal hospital classification.

| I would be very concerned and looking for a second opinion regarding what is going on with him. He's lost 1/3 of his body weight in a week, is yelping and is not eating. Please keep us posted.
