I agree that a second opinion is in order -- Am I reading correctly that you had a 3 pound dog and he lost 1 pound -- leaving him at 2 pounds? That is way too much weight loss for one week! I would have thought they would want to keep him hospitalized and give fluids for that drastic of a loss. That is a third of his body weight in a week!

Infection should be easy enough to identify! Was there fever? What did the gums look like? Did they do blood tests?

This is pretty serious. Yorkies can go down so quickly. I would not hesitate. I would make an appointment at another vet, prefrably one with animal hospital classification.
