| I think Scooter has diabetes Hi everyone, my senior adopted dog Scooter (just adopted in July) has been drinking so much water lately. He is overweight and was when I got him just a few months ago but he seems to be getting worse with all the water he drinks. He has an appointment this Friday for the vet but I feel it must be diabetes. Unfortunately a few years ago- I had adopted a minpin from a shelter that was about 6 years old. She became suddenly in and I had rushed her to the vet. He informed me after bloodwork that she ahd diabetes, sadly she died that night. So now that I am seeing Scooter drink all this water- 3 big bowls in a day- I think he has the same symptoms. He got up at 2am this morning and drank so much water that when I picked him back up into the bed, he was so full- he vomited all over the bed. He has been doing this too after all the drinking. I wouldn't mind if I have to give him insulin, if it turns out he does have diabetes but he just seems to be looking poorly these days. Does anyone else here have any dogs with diabetes? Thanks so much, Margaret in NY |

| My GF's little poodle has diabetes. They give her shots twice everyday and make sure she has food. She's such a little diva doggie, and my friend just rolls her eyes and says, "What did you expect? She's French!" Other than that she's back to her old self and doing fine, I'm sure your baby will be okay, too.

| Sorry to hear about scooter not feeling well. We had a schnauzer, Starsky that had diabetes. He got a shot once a day and would stand in front of the ice box and wait for it. He was about 10 years old when he got it and lived 4 years with it. He lost weight and drank alot of water when he was diagnosed with it. It could be his thyroid. Some furbabies are over weight because there thyroid are not working right. Scooter will be in my prayers.

| sometimes a dog may drink lots of water is b/c of renal failure. usually occurs in older dogs and can have gradual weight loss withit. the vet treats the dog with a low protein, low phosphorus diet. cathy and yoshi |

| Scooter saw the vet tonight Hi everyone, Thank you for all the kind words. Well Scooter doesn't have diabetes but the vet thinks it is either Cushings or renal failure. I know both were posted as possible problems here in the posts. He has all the symptoms of Cushings too but the doctor said he urine was so diluted that he doesn't know until the test come abck whether it's diluted because the kidneys can't dilute it (renal failure) or is it something else causing the kidneys not to dilute it (Cushings. So he did blood work and will call me tomorrow with what he found out. Poor Scooter he is such a good boy and he has so many other health problems. I only adopted him this past July but it was obvious his previous owner didn't take care of his teeth (they are so gross) plus he has cataracts. Then the vet said he has bad knees and also deformities of his front legs (I think he said valgus?). Then on top of all of that news, the vet felt a hard mass on his left side of his abdomen. But he didn't know if it was the stomach wall because his stomach is so tight (and fat) or if it is something worse. Well overall I guess I knew I would probably not hear good news. I knew when I adopted him he was a senior and didn't look in the best shape either. I guess I figured just because he was old, he needed a home too and even if he wasn't the healthiest dog it was ok. But I didn't think I would find out he was so sick. But I will do some searching on Cushings now on the internet and I will post back here tomorrow what the vet says about the bloodwork. I hope it's not kidney failure. If it is Cushings, then I can treat him. The vet also said if it's Cushings then we can give him medicine for his bad arthritic limbs but if its his kidneys he said he can't give him meds because it will harm his kidneys even more. He is still young at heart though because he gets so excited to go in the car, and play with his toys. I can buy him one of those dog strollers so he can still get to the park and get out without having to walk so much and then be limping the next day. Anyway, Thank you again for the kind words, I appreciate it very much. Take care, Margaret and Scooter in NY |

| Im so sorry!! but I do know the cushings can be treated! should he be diagnoised with cushings I can tell you where to get your scripts the vet charges up to 95.00 I get them for 58.00 to 65.00 it varies for a blister pack of 30 and tilly gets 1/4 of the tab so it lasts quite awhile, she is on Anipryl, Tillys urine is also deluted, It really does sound like cushings but lets hope what ever it may be it can be treated! hang in there, here is some info on it, please let us know! Cushings dog There are many clinical signs associated with Cushing’s syndrome (also called hyperadrenocorticism) in dogs. These signs usually come on very gradually and, because of this slow onset, these changes are often written off as part of the normal aging process. The following is a list of common symptoms which an owner might observe in their pet at home. DRINKING EXCESSIVELY/URINATING EXCESSIVELY/INCONTINENCEThirsty cushings dog Owners often notice that lately the water bowl must be filled more frequently than in the past. Some dogs are unable to hold their bladder all night and begin crying to go outside during the night when previously this was unnecessary. Also, urinary tract infections may also be detected and true urine leaking may be observed. HOW MUCH WATER CONSUMPTION IS NORMAL? Each day a dog should drink about 1 cup of water for each 10 pounds of body weight. INCREASED OR EVEN RAVENOUS APPETITE Trashy cushings dog This symptom often leads dogs to beg incessantly or steal food from the garbage. It is important for an owner not to be fooled by the pet’s good appetite; eating well is not necessarily a sign of normal health. POT-BELLIED APPEARANCEPot bellied cushings This symptom, present in over 90% of Cushing’s syndrome dogs, results from hormonal redistribution of body fat plus a breakdown of abdominal musculature. MUSCLE WEAKNESS Muscle protein is broken down in Cushing’s syndrome. The result may be seen as exercise intolerance, lethargy, or reluctance to jump up on furniture or climb stairs. Cushings skin disease hasn't effected tilly that much at all! she has a smoothe tummy and her coat has thined out, but nothing drastic, The classical signs of endocrine (hormonal) skin diseases are: Hair loss on the main body sparing the head and legs Thin, wrinkled skin with poor wound healing Hair that does not grow back after clipping. Blackheads and darkening of the skin, especially on the abdomen. Persistent or recurring skin infections (especially if the dog is not itchy during times when the skin infection is cleared) Another condition of the skin which may be observed is called Calcinosis Cutis, in which calcium deposits occur within the skin. These are raised, hard, almost rock-like areas which can occur almost anywhere on the body. Some other notable findings might include: excessive panting and shortness of breath, infertility, extreme muscle stiffness (called pseudomyotonia - a very very rare symptom in Cushing’s disease), and high blood pressure. |

| Bloodwork update for scooter Hi everyone, well I jsut heard from the vet and I am actually feeling a little hopeful! He said Scooters kidney and liver function are fine, he said he was even surprised. So he said we will ahve to wait on the results of the cortisol test - I guess to say for shure if it's Cushings but I am taking this as a good thing. It is way better than his kidneys failing- whew! I am feeling a little relief today! I will keep this updated and Thanks so much again for the kind words! Margaret and Scooter |

| Just saw this thread. I'm sorry your little Scooter is ill, but it does sound as if it is not as bad as you expected. Hopefully, you will be able to control the problem with diet and medication. Scooter is so lucky to have you adopt him! I think you are a wonderful person to take on the responsibility of adopting an older dog. Especially one with medical problems. I wish there were more people like you in the world. |
